A mini session is 20 to 30 minutes. That is not long, and the less time you spend on arrival logistics and wardrobe decisions, the more of that time you spend actually being photographed. This guide covers everything you need to do before you arrive.
The single biggest factor that affects how images look — apart from the light and the photographer — is clothing. Choose outfits in advance, lay them out the evening before, and confirm they are clean, pressed, and ready to put on without any last-minute changes.
Coordinate colours rather than matching exactly. A palette of 2 to 3 related colours (cream, sage, and rust; navy, white, and tan) looks considerably better in photographs than everyone wearing the same shirt. Avoid busy patterns, large logos, or very bright colours that compete with the environment.
This is the most important practical advice for any session involving children under five: arrive when they would normally be at their most cooperative — after a nap, not during one; fed, not hungry; rested, not overtired. A 20-minute slot goes much better with a cooperative toddler than a difficult one.
Bring one or two of their favourite small toys or books as backup. Use them if needed. A child engaged with something familiar and comforting is a child who is not looking anxious.
Arrive 5 to 10 minutes before your slot — not 20 minutes early, because the previous session will still be finishing; not late, because every minute of your slot is valuable. Give yourself time to park, find the location, and settle the children before the photography begins.
Follow the location instructions sent in advance carefully. Mini session locations are chosen for their quality of light and visual interest; they sometimes require a short walk.
Avoid giving snacks that stain (anything with chocolate or red juice) in the hour before the session. Avoid cutting children's hair the day before — they sometimes react to haircuts with redness or sensitivity. Avoid making the session feel high-stakes to the children; they respond to your energy. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed they will be.
