Pets are family members. This is not a controversial observation — most pet owners feel it completely. And yet, the photographs most people have of their pets are blurry phone shots taken at awkward angles. A professional pet portrait session is the photograph your dog or cat deserves.
Pet photography requires different skills from family portrait photography. A dog will not sit on request for more than approximately thirty seconds; a cat will do exactly what it wants regardless of what you or the photographer wants; a puppy is a chaos tornado with paws. The approach is entirely reactive — you follow the pet, not the other way around.
The equipment choice matters: a telephoto lens allows working from distance without the camera being a distraction; a fast shutter speed captures the movement; a lower shooting angle (eye level with the pet) creates the images that are most compelling — not shots taken looking down at an animal, but images from their own perspective of the world.
Outdoor locations work best for dogs — a field or woodland where they have space to run and you can capture them in their element. The interaction between a dog and its natural environment (running through grass, investigating a tree, mid-leap over a stream) creates much more interesting photographs than a posed studio portrait.
The ideal scenario: the owner brings a favourite toy or treat, the dog interacts naturally with its environment and its person, and the photographs capture the specific personality of this particular animal.
Pet sessions frequently become family sessions when owners realise they want to be in the photographs with their animals. The interaction between a person and their dog is genuinely photogenic — the communication, the trust, the slightly ridiculous conversations people have with animals when they think no one is watching.
Pet and puppy portrait sessions in Cambridge and surrounding areas. All breeds welcome — the difficult ones are sometimes the most interesting to photograph.
