A cake smash session is a themed photography setup for a baby's first birthday, built around providing the baby with a small decorated cake and photographing what happens next. The session typically includes a pre-smash portrait set — the baby dressed and looking beautiful before the cake; then the smash itself; then, often, a clean-up set where they are photographed in a small bubble bath or wrapped in a towel, looking pleased with themselves.

The Setup

Cake smash sessions use a simple styled set: a background colour or patterned backdrop, coordinating decorations (balloons, a small banner, a number one), and the cake itself. The cakes used are either supplied by the photographer (a simple smash cake, usually from a local baker, in the session's colour palette) or provided by the family.

Everything should be taste-safe. Most cake smash cakes use vanilla sponge and buttercream — sweet, soft, and safe for a baby to consume. Avoid anything with strong food colouring that will stain skin for hours; natural colouring or very light tones work better.

How to Prepare Your Baby

Schedule the session mid-morning when the baby is typically at their most cooperative — after the morning nap, fed but not full. Dress them in the birthday outfit and bring the smash outfit separately to change into. Bring a spare change of clothes for the parents as well. The session room will be protected, but cake is energetic.
