Lavenham is frequently cited as the best-preserved medieval town in England — a statement that travels far in a country full of preserved historic towns, and is nevertheless accurate. The wool-trading wealth of the 15th century built more than 300 timber-framed buildings here, most of which still stand in something close to their original form. For wedding photography, Lavenham is simply extraordinary.
The medieval street pattern of Lavenham has survived almost entirely intact. The Market Place, with the distinctive Guildhall of Corpus Christi at its north end, is surrounded by timber-framed buildings that date from 1390 to 1530 — a 140-year window of extraordinary architectural production during the town's peak as one of England's wealthiest wool-trading centres.
The Guildhall itself — a mid-16th century oak-framed building with carved corner posts and oversailing upper floors — is the most photographed building in Suffolk and possibly in all of East Anglia. The square in front of it can be included in wedding photographs in ways that make the medieval architecture an unmistakable anchor for the image — there is nowhere else in England that looks like this.
Beyond the Market Place, the streets of Water Street, Shilling Street, and Barn Street all offer continuous rows of crooked, overhanging, plastered and timber buildings in Suffolk pink and ochre wash — the traditional lime render colours specific to this part of East Anglia. The light on these street elevations in afternoon and evening sun is warm, directional, and deeply photographic.
Lavenham's parish church is one of the great wool churches of Suffolk — a building of cathedral scale funded by the de Vere family and the local guild network at the height of the wool trade. The 141-foot tower (the tallest perpendicular tower in Suffolk) dominates the surrounding countryside and can be photographed from the churchyard and the surrounding fields.
The interior — broad nave with perpendicular windows creating a bright, clear-glass light — is one of the finest church interiors in East Anglia for ceremony photography. The combination of the flint flushwork exterior, the churchyard with its ancient headstones, and the interior light make St Peter and St Paul one of the finest parish church wedding settings in England.
The Swan Hotel, Lavenham — one of the most historic hotels in Suffolk, occupying several medieval buildings on the High Street with a walled garden. The interior has an extraordinary collection of medieval timbers and carved details. The combination of the Swan's interior and the Lavenham streets outside creates a virtually self-contained wedding photography environment.
Lavenham Guildhall (National Trust) — the Market Place and the Guildhall building can be hired for certain events. The adjacent garden and the square itself provide settings that are unmistakably and specifically Lavenham.
Great House Restaurant and Hotel — a French-owned hotel on Market Place combining Georgian and medieval architecture with a walled garden. Available for exclusive hire for small weddings and civil ceremonies.
The Old Grammar School, Lavenham — a 16th-century timber-framed building available as a self-catering property that can be booked alongside nearby venues. The building and its garden are available for small intimate ceremonies.
Market Place at dusk — when the day visitors have departed and the medieval buildings are lit by the low warm light of early evening, the square becomes almost entirely private. This is the best time for photography in the town centre.
Water Street — a long run of continuous medieval buildings with few modern intrusions. The lane narrows at the far end toward the church, creating a natural photograph leading into the Great Church tower.
Churchyard and south field view — the view from the south of the churchyard over the gentle valley of the Brett is one of the classic Suffolk landscapes. In spring, the field margins are full of wildflowers; in autumn, the hedgerow trees turn amber-gold against the flinthwork of the church.
Lavenham village approach — the approach roads from the south and west pass through open farmland with views of the church tower rising above the town. These establishing landscapes are important for wedding albums seeking to tell the story of place.
Lavenham is 20 miles from Dedham Vale — the Stour Valley landscape made famous by John Constable's paintings. The two artistic geographies (the medieval wool towns of West Suffolk and the painted river valley of the Stour) complement each other and can be combined in a wedding day with careful planning. The Constable Country villages of Dedham, Flatford, East Bergholt, and Nayland all offer additional photography settings within reasonable distance.
