A punting portrait session on the River Cam is one of the most distinctively Cambridge things you can do — and it creates photographs unlike anything else. The flat-bottomed wooden punts, the weeping willows, the ancient bridges, the college spires reflected in the water: when everything comes together, it's genuinely magical. Here's everything you need to know about including punting in your Cambridge wedding or engagement session.
Punting photography is special for several reasons:
Several punting companies in Cambridge offer private hire — which is what you need for a photography session. Avoid shared chauffeur punts (full of tourists) and self-hire punts (too much effort!). Private hire gives you a dedicated punt, a skilled chauffeur, and the freedom to move at your own pace.
Cambridge Chauffeur Punts, Scudamore's, and Let's Go Punting all offer private hire. Booking in advance is essential, particularly for weekend shoots in summer.
💡 Session tip: Early morning (before 10am) punting sessions are the best — the river is quiet, the light is soft and directional, and the tourist punts haven't started yet. A 7:30–9am summer session on the Cam is genuinely magical.
For a Cambridge wedding, a 30–45 minute punting portrait session after the ceremony is a wonderful addition to the day. The couple have a relaxed, romantic interlude away from guests while I photograph from both the riverbank and a second punt. It creates a very different set of images from the ceremony and reception coverage.
For engagement and pre-wedding shoots, I generally recommend 60–90 minutes on the water, often combined with a walk along The Backs before or after.

Look at the natural light at the time of day your ceremony will take place. Walk outside and consider where portraits will happen — is there an area with shade, a garden, a meaningful backdrop? Ask about vendor restrictions (some venues require you to use their preferred photographer list). Check logistics: where do guests park, where does the bridal party get ready, is there a bridal suite?
Popular venues book 18–24 months ahead, especially for peak season (May–September) Saturdays. If you're flexible on date and day of week, 12 months is usually sufficient. Always view a venue before booking — photos online rarely show the full picture of scale, light, or atmosphere.
Ask: what's included in the venue hire? Can you bring your own caterer? What are the noise restrictions and finishing times? Is there accommodation on site? What's the plan if it rains for outdoor ceremonies? What is the minimum and maximum guest capacity? Are there any vendor restrictions or preferred supplier lists?
Venue architecture, grounds, and natural light dramatically affect the quality of wedding photography. Beautiful venues with varied backdrops, good natural light in the key rooms, and outdoor space for portraits make the photographer's job much easier. When choosing a venue, visiting at the same time of day as your planned ceremony is helpful for assessing the light.
Natural light (large windows, north-facing rooms), textured backgrounds (stone walls, wooden beams, floral arrangements), varied outdoor spaces (gardens, courtyards, woodland, water features), and interesting architectural details. Venues that feel authentic to their setting — a barn that's actually rustic, a manor house with period features — photograph better than generic white box venues.
