Queens' College Cambridge is one of the most photographically rewarding venues in England — medieval courtyards, the famous Mathematical Bridge, and a secret riverside garden that few visitors ever see. If you're getting married at Queens' or planning an engagement shoot there, this guide covers every photography highlight and how to make the most of this extraordinary location.
Founded in 1448 and 1465 by two queens of England (hence Queens' with the apostrophe after the 's'), Queens' College sits at one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Cam, directly beside the Mathematical Bridge. Its medieval and Tudor architecture has been remarkably well preserved, giving the college a character quite different from the grander neoclassical colleges like King's or Trinity.
For photography, Queens' offers an unusual combination: intimate medieval scale alongside the drama of the river and the famous bridge. It feels less like a public monument and more like a private world — which is exactly what makes wedding photography here so special.
The Mathematical Bridge — officially the Wooden Bridge — crosses the Cam between the old and new parts of Queens' College. Built in 1749 and rebuilt twice since, it has the appearance of an arch but is constructed entirely from straight timbers arranged in a geometric pattern. The legend that it was designed by Isaac Newton (who died 22 years before it was built) is entirely false, but delightfully persistent.
Queens' has two medieval courts that are unrivalled in Cambridge for intimate, enclosed photography. Old Court (1448) is the oldest complete court in Cambridge — its half-timbered President's Lodge gives it a domestic warmth that contrasts beautifully with the grander stone colleges.
Cloister Court, with its ground-floor cloister walk, creates natural framing opportunities in any weather — the colonnade means wedding portraits work perfectly even if it rains. The arches cast beautiful dappled shadow patterns in afternoon sun. Very few Cambridge colleges offer this kind of covered portrait space.
💡 Photography Tip: The cloisters at Queens' face various directions, so the light changes dramatically throughout the day. I always visit a few weeks before a wedding to test light at the exact time your portrait session will happen.
Queens' riverside garden — the stretch between the Mathematical Bridge and the Erasmus Building — is closed to the public but accessible during college events including weddings. Weeping willows trail into the Cam, punts pass below ancient stone walls, and in June, the garden is full of roses and flowering shrubs.
This is the least-photographed part of Queens' and often produces the most beautiful wedding portraits — there's a quality of light on the water here in late afternoon that is almost Mediterranean in summer.
Queens' College is photogenic in every season, but each offers something different:
I'm a Cambridge-based wedding photographer who knows every light and angle in Queens' College — from the Mathematical Bridge at sunrise to the riverside garden at golden hour. Let's talk about your day.
