Spring is the most visually spectacular season for engagement photography in Cambridge. From February's first snowdrops to late May's bluebell woods, the city and surrounding countryside move through a sequence of flowering trees, riverside blossom, and lush meadow green that makes every week feel distinctly different. This is a month-by-month guide to planning spring engagement photographs in Cambridge.
Cambridge's winter ends early. By mid-February, snowdrops appear in the college gardens, along the riverbanks, and in the churchyards around the city. The light in February is low and directional — golden even at midday — which makes it one of the most flattering months for portrait photography. The city is quiet, tourist-free, and atmospheric.
March is when Cambridge begins its visual transformation. Magnolia trees — there are several magnificent ones throughout the college gardens and residential streets — produce their large cup-shaped flowers in late February to late March before any leaves appear. The contrast of the pale pink magnolia blooms against a clear blue March sky is one of the most photographically striking things in the city in spring.
April is the most sought-after month for spring engagement photography in Cambridge. The cherry blossom along the avenue towards King's College, the ornamental cherries throughout the Cambridge Botanic Garden, and the drifts of pink and white blossom at Grantchester Meadows combine with the longest daylight hours since autumn and mild temperatures that make extended outdoor sessions comfortable.
Photographer's note on cherry blossom timing: I check blossom conditions in Cambridge every spring and keep an updated log of when each key location peaks. If you book an April session, I'll message you in the week before with real-time blossom conditions so we can make the most of the window. Cherry blossom can be perfect for five days, then gone — a flexible session date in the same week makes a significant difference to the final images.
May is bluebell season. The ancient woodland at Hayley Wood (about 12 miles west of Cambridge) and at Wandlebury Country Park (4 miles south of the city) both produce dense carpets of bluebells from late April through mid-May. The deep blue-purple colour against the fresh pale green of new beech leaves creates one of the most distinctive backdrops possible for engagement photography.
