St John's College is one of the two largest and most architecturally spectacular Cambridge colleges — a sequence of seven courts, two rivers, three bridges (including the famous Bridge of Sighs), gardens stretching along the Cam, and a setting that combines Tudor Gothic, Baroque, Victorian Gothic Revival, and modern architecture across a single site. For sheer variety and scale of photography locations, St John's is exceptional.
The covered bridge that connects the old courts of St John's on the east bank with New Court on the west bank was built in 1831 by Henry Hutchinson. It was immediately nicknamed "the Bridge of Sighs" after Venice's famous bridge — although the Cambridge version connects two college courts rather than a prison to a court of justice. The bridge is neo-Gothic in style, with stone tracery windows on both sides. It is the most photographed bridge in Cambridge.
The most celebrated view of the Bridge of Sighs is from the Kitchen Bridge (the public stone bridge just north of college grounds on the Cam towpath), looking south-east. This view frames the Bridge of Sighs between the old college buildings on either side of the river — the two-arched Wren Bridge (1712) and old court in the foreground, the covered Bridge of Sighs crossing behind. A couple standing on the Kitchen Bridge is technically on a public footbridge and the Bridge of Sighs is visible behind — a magnificent Cambridge backdrop without needing college access.
The First Court of St John's was built between 1511 and 1520, founded by Lady Margaret Beaufort (mother of Henry VII) who also founded Christ's College. The great gatehouse tower faces St John's Street and bears the original Tudor coat of arms. The court itself is large, with medieval buildings on all four sides — more expansive than King's or Clare but with the same warm limestone and slate roof quality that characterises the best 16th-century Cambridge building.
New Court (1825–31) is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Cambridge — a vast neo-Gothic pile of white magnesian limestone nicknamed "the Wedding Cake" by Cambridge students for its ornate pinnacled skyline. The contrast between the dark older courts on the east bank and the white confection of New Court on the west bank is remarkable, and the court itself offers a very different kind of architectural portrait setting — ornate and romantic compared to the restraint of the old courts.
St John's extends further along the west bank of the Cam than any other college — the gardens between the Cam and Queen's Road are extensive, with mature specimen trees, open lawns, and the famous "round island" in the river. The view north along the Cam from within the St John's Backs — looking toward the gentle bend in the river with the lime trees overhead and the New Court behind — is one of the least-used but most beautiful river portraits in Cambridge because it requires access to the college grounds.
Notable St John's Alumni: William Wordsworth (who describes his college rooms in The Prelude), William Cecil (Lord Burghley, Elizabeth I's chief minister), John Cleveland, Clive James, and Douglas Adams. The college's choir is among the finest in Cambridge — available for college weddings.
St John's is one of the grandest and most varied photography settings in Cambridge. Whether your event is in the college or you want a portrait session incorporating the Bridge of Sighs, I can plan the best route through the college and surroundings to make the most of your time.
