The University Arms is Cambridge's most celebrated hotel — a grand Victorian building on the corner of Regent Street and Parker's Piece that was extensively refurbished in 2018 by architect John Simpson and designer Martin Brudnizki. It is now one of the finest wedding venues in the city: architecturally magnificent, superbly located, and equipped with event spaces that combine Victorian grandeur with modern elegance. This is a complete photography guide for couples considering the University Arms for their Cambridge wedding.
The University Arms opened in 1834 — making it one of Cambridge's oldest hotels — and occupies a prominent position overlooking Parker's Piece, the large Victorian public park a short walk from the city centre. The 2018 refurbishment by John Simpson Architects reinstated the building's original Georgian and Victorian proportions, adding a new wing that matches the historic context perfectly.
The interiors by Martin Brudnizki — dark panelling, Chesterfield furniture, bookshelves, and carefully considered lighting — create a distinctly English atmosphere: simultaneously formal and relaxed, like a very grand country house in the middle of a university city.
The private dining room attached to Parker's Tavern (the hotel's restaurant, designed by Brudnizki with original Tim Duffy ceramics) seats up to 24 guests for an intimate wedding breakfast. One of the most beautiful small dining rooms in Cambridge.
The principal function room at University Arms — licensed for civil ceremonies and accommodating up to 120 guests for a ceremony or wedding breakfast. High ceilings, tall windows overlooking the hotel gardens, and the Brudnizki colour palette of greens, navies, and warm golds.
A formal lounge with deep armchairs, bookshelves, and original artwork. Perfect for intimate champagne receptions and pre-ceremony drinks. The combination of warm bookshelves and tall windows creates a naturally photogenic atmosphere for informal portraits.
The University Arms suites offer some of the most beautifully lit getting-ready spaces of any Cambridge hotel. The corner rooms facing Parker's Piece have large windows on two walls, creating soft natural light excellent for bridal preparation photography.
The hotel's frontage faces directly onto Parker's Piece — Cambridge's charming 25-acre Victorian park, famous as the site where the rules of football were first codified. The lime tree avenues, the lamp standards, and the park's open green space make it an immediate outdoor portrait option directly from the hotel.
The University Arms is one of my favourite Cambridge wedding venues for full-day photography. The getting-ready pictures in the suites, the intimate reception spaces, the Parker's Piece portraits in afternoon light, and the proximity to The Backs for golden-hour shots give a complete photographic narrative that flows naturally from morning to late evening. Everything you need is within walking distance.

Look at the natural light at the time of day your ceremony will take place. Walk outside and consider where portraits will happen — is there an area with shade, a garden, a meaningful backdrop? Ask about vendor restrictions (some venues require you to use their preferred photographer list). Check logistics: where do guests park, where does the bridal party get ready, is there a bridal suite?
Popular venues book 18–24 months ahead, especially for peak season (May–September) Saturdays. If you're flexible on date and day of week, 12 months is usually sufficient. Always view a venue before booking — photos online rarely show the full picture of scale, light, or atmosphere.
Ask: what's included in the venue hire? Can you bring your own caterer? What are the noise restrictions and finishing times? Is there accommodation on site? What's the plan if it rains for outdoor ceremonies? What is the minimum and maximum guest capacity? Are there any vendor restrictions or preferred supplier lists?
Venue architecture, grounds, and natural light dramatically affect the quality of wedding photography. Beautiful venues with varied backdrops, good natural light in the key rooms, and outdoor space for portraits make the photographer's job much easier. When choosing a venue, visiting at the same time of day as your planned ceremony is helpful for assessing the light.
Natural light (large windows, north-facing rooms), textured backgrounds (stone walls, wooden beams, floral arrangements), varied outdoor spaces (gardens, courtyards, woodland, water features), and interesting architectural details. Venues that feel authentic to their setting — a barn that's actually rustic, a manor house with period features — photograph better than generic white box venues.
