You've just had a baby — congratulations. With a newborn photoshoot booked, the last thing you want to worry about is what to wear. The good news: dressing for newborn photography is actually simpler than most parents expect. This guide covers exactly what works, what doesn't, and why.
The honest truth is that newborn sessions are all about the baby. Your clothing serves as a supporting backdrop — it should feel comfortable, look natural, and not compete with the tiny person who is absolutely the star of every image. Simple, neutral, and comfortable: those are the three principles.
📋 What's in this guide:
1. The baby is the focus
Parent outfits serve as a backdrop. The eye should always be drawn to the baby's face, hands, and expressions — not to a bold pattern, bright colour, or distracting accessory. Choose outfits that recede visually rather than compete.
2. Comfort over photogenic
You've just had a baby. A newborn session typically runs 2–4 hours. You'll be sitting, standing, holding, nursing, possibly changing positions repeatedly. Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. A confident, relaxed posture produces better photographs than perfect clothing on a tense, uncomfortable parent.
3. Simple and coordinated, not matching
The family should look like they belong in the same photograph — warm, cohesive, connected. This doesn't mean everyone in identical outfits; it means choosing a common colour palette (2–3 tones) that creates visual harmony.
The postpartum body has just done something extraordinary. Whatever stage of recovery you're in, the aim is to feel genuinely comfortable and at ease — not squeezed or uncomfortable, and not hidden either.
Newborns may feed several times during a 2–3 hour session. This is completely normal and expected. Wear something that allows easy access without requiring a full change of outfit. Whatever you normally use to nurse comfortably is the right choice.
The partner's role in newborn photography is to look natural, warm, and cohesive. Clean, simple, comfortable clothing in neutral or coordinating tones is almost always the right answer.
💡 Practical note: Both parents should check their chosen outfit the evening before. Run through: does it coordinate with your partner's outfit? Is it clean and uncreased? Is it comfortable to sit holding a baby in for extended periods? Are there any logos, text, or bold patterns that might draw the eye? Five minutes of preparation prevents the most common outfit problems.
Neutral tones are the gold standard for newborn photography. They keep the focus on the baby, they age beautifully (these photos will still look timeless in 20 years), and they coordinate easily across the whole family.
All neutrals
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Ivory + cream + warm beige + soft grey. Timeless, clean, universally flattering. The most popular choice for good reason.
Neutrals with one soft accent
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Cream and grey + a single soft dusty rose or sage green accent. Adds warmth and a touch of colour without dominating.
Earthy warm tones
⭐⭐⭐⭐Camel + warm beige + rust. Particularly beautiful for autumn sessions or warm wooden indoor settings.
Navy and cream
⭐⭐⭐⭐Classic and clean. A parent in navy paired with another in cream creates a strong visual pairing that stays timeless.
Soft monochrome
⭐⭐⭐⭐Different shades of the same colour family — all whites and off-whites, or all warm greys. Minimal and striking.
Including existing children in the newborn session creates some of the most meaningful family images you'll ever own. Sibling outfits should coordinate with the family palette while being practical for an active child.
Skin-to-skin images — a parent holding their newborn against bare skin — are among the most powerful and intimate photographs possible. They capture the physical reality of new parenthood in a way no other type of image does.
If you'd like skin-to-skin images (and I always recommend at least a few), plan ahead:
✗ Bold patterns and logos
In a session focused on the smallest details — tiny fingers, a newborn's expression — a bold printed shirt is a significant distraction. Solid, simple, neutral is almost always better.
✗ Scratchy or rough fabrics
Obvious but sometimes overlooked: anything you'll be holding a newborn against should be soft and gentle. Avoid rough seams, scratchy wool, embellishments, or anything stiff.
✗ Anything that restricts comfort
Post-birth recovery means your body is still changing. Dress for genuine comfort, not for what you think you 'should' look like 2 weeks after having a baby. There are no expectations here — only beautiful images.
✗ Very dark colours for the whole family
Dark clothing against a newborn can sometimes create too stark a contrast. One person in a deeper tone (navy, charcoal) is fine; an all-dark family palette can look heavy in photographs.
✗ New shoes (especially for children)
New shoes that rub or pinch will make children visibly uncomfortable and disruptive. Stick with known comfortable footwear — or go barefoot.

Newborn Photography →Q: What should I wear for a newborn photoshoot as mum?
Something that makes you feel comfortable and natural at this stage of postpartum recovery. A soft wrap, robe, or stretchy dress in a neutral tone is ideal — practical for nursing, comfortable for sitting, and beautiful in photographs. Most importantly: wear something that actually feels good on your body right now.
Q: What colour palette works best for newborn photography?
Soft neutrals are universally the most effective — cream, ivory, warm beige, warm grey, dusty rose, sage green. These keep the focus entirely on the baby and create timeless images. Avoid bright, bold, or very dark colours for anyone taking part in close-contact shots.
Q: Does dad / the other parent need to be in the photos?
It's entirely your choice, but I'd always encourage it. Images of both parents with your newborn are among the most valuable family archives you can create. Getting one parent in the images who 'doesn't like being photographed' is genuinely something I am accustomed to handling.
Q: Should newborns wear outfits during the session?
Often the most beautiful newborn images feature only the baby wrapped in soft fabric — no clothing. But tiny outfits and wraps for family portraits can be very sweet. I use clean, soft wraps and props — discuss preferences when we plan your session.
Q: What if my newborn cries or won't settle?
Every newborn session includes settling time. Feeding, holding, rocking, white noise — whatever your baby needs, we work with it. Sessions are designed with time built in for these interruptions. There is no pressure, and the most meaningful images often emerge during these quieter settling moments.
