Dundee sits on the Tay estuary with one of Scotland's most varied and beautiful landscape settings immediately surrounding it. East of the city, Broughty Castle's 15th-century tower stands at the estuary shore with a sandy beach below. South across the great road bridge, Tentsmuir Forest and beach in Fife gives the extraordinary combinations of ancient Scots pine woodland running onto a wide coastal strand. North, the Sidlaw Hills rise to open moorland with views to the Highland mountains.
I photograph families with a relaxed, documentary approach — following rather than directing, finding the real moments in whatever setting the family chooses. Scotland's northern summer light is extraordinary: in June and July, golden hour at Broughty Castle beach can last until 10pm, giving warm, low light across the Tay estuary that is unlike anywhere else in Britain.
Dundee's cultural regeneration has also created excellent architectural settings — the V&A Dundee building and waterfront for families who want a contemporary, design-focused session alongside the natural landscape options.

Broughty Castle beach is my first choice for most Dundee families. The combination of the 15th-century castle tower, the sandy beach on the Tay estuary, the estuary views south to Fife, and the child-friendly beach environment is genuinely exceptional. Children love the beach setting and the castle is an extraordinary backdrop at any time of year. For something completely different, Tentsmuir Forest and beach in Fife (20 minutes south) gives the unique combination of ancient Scots pine woodland running onto a wide open beach.
Tentsmuir is one of the most beautiful and unusual photography locations in eastern Scotland. Ancient Scots pine forest — with the sandy floor and gnarled red bark typical of old Caledonian woodland — runs directly onto a wide, largely empty beach on the Firth of Tay coast. It is perfect for family photography: children love both the forest and the beach, and the contrast of the two environments within a short walk gives excellent variety. Sessions here tend to go very naturally.
Yes — the regenerated Dundee Waterfront with the V&A building (designed by Kengo Kuma) and the RRS Discovery nearby is a striking urban family photography setting. The architectural geometry of the V&A exterior and the wide river promenade give a modern, design-focused backdrop. This works well for families who want a more contemporary, architectural setting rather than a landscape one.
Yes — I cover Dundee and the whole of the Angus, Tayside, and north Fife region, including Perth, Arbroath, Montrose, Forfar, Carnoustie, and St Andrews. Travel within 30 miles of Dundee is included in session fees.
Eastern Scotland has a relatively dry, clear climate. Summer (June–August) on the Broughty Castle and Tentsmuir beaches is excellent — long northern light in the evening gives extraordinary warm colour as late as 10pm. Autumn in Camperdown Park gives beautiful colour. Spring on the Angus coastline — with clear air and the possibility of seeing seal colonies at Tentsmuir — is genuinely special. Winter sessions above the Sidlaw Hills with snow and the Highlands visible to the north have a wild, dramatic quality.
