A clear, well-structured brief is the single most effective thing a client can do to improve the photography they receive. Most disappointments in professional photography trace back not to the photographer's skill, but to a mismatch between what the client wanted and what was communicated. Here is how to brief any photographer clearly — covering every session type from weddings to corporate headshots to family sessions.
Photographers are skilled at reading and responding to situations — but they cannot read minds. Without a brief, they make informed assumptions. Those assumptions are usually reasonable, but they may not align with your specific priorities. A brief closes this gap completely.
A good brief is not a constraint on the photographer's creativity — it is a context that enables it. Knowing what matters most to you, what is non-negotiable, and what the images will be used for allows a good photographer to make better creative decisions throughout the session.
Words like "natural", "romantic", or "professional" mean different things to different people. An image, however, is unambiguous. "I want images that look like this" with a reference image conveys more information than a paragraph of adjectives. Build a small reference folder and share it with your photographer before the session.
There is such a thing as an over-specified brief. Including too much detail can constrain a photographer in ways that reduce the quality of the work. Avoid:
The format matters almost as much as the content. The most effective approach:
Yes. Experience tells a photographer how to execute well; your brief tells them what to execute. An experienced photographer will be more effective with a clear brief than without one — they will use the context you provide to make better decisions throughout the session.
Significant changes to the scope, style, or coverage requirements — particularly close to the session — should be discussed explicitly with the photographer. Changes that expand the scope (more people, longer coverage, additional locations) may affect the cost. Changes that clarify style are almost always welcome.
You can share references to any photographer's work as style guidance. This is useful and appropriate. It does not mean you expect identical replication — it conveys the mood, editing style, and level of formality you are drawn to. Your photographer will use it as context, not instructions.
Yes. If there are divorced parents who should not be photographed together, estranged family members, recently bereaved guests, or any other situation that affects how the photographer should operate, tell them in advance. They will handle it discreetly. Not telling them creates the risk of an awkward or uncomfortable moment that is entirely preventable.
