The Sikh wedding ceremony — the Anand Karaj — is one of the most serene and visually striking of all religious wedding traditions. Held in a Gurdwara (Sikh temple), it centres on the Laavan: four rounds around the Guru Granth Sahib (the sacred scripture) whilst the Granthi (priest) recites specific hymns. Each circle represents a stage in the couple's spiritual journey together.
As a photographer, the Anand Karaj requires particular respect and preparation. There are specific protocols about behaviour inside a Gurdwara — removing shoes, covering your head, and understanding where you may and may not stand during the ceremony. Speak to the Granthi and the family before the day to understand what is permitted.
The four Laavan rounds are the heart of the ceremony. The couple hold a palla (sash) between them and walk clockwise around the Guru Granth Sahib. Position yourself to capture the couple's faces, the flowing fabric, and the congregation's expressions — the parents watching their child complete each circle is always deeply moving.
For each round, try to find a clean angle that includes the Guru Granth Sahib in the background without being disrespectful. Use a telephoto lens to shoot from distance rather than moving close during the ceremony.
The Milni is the formal greeting ceremony between the two families, typically held outside the Gurdwara. Men from both families are introduced, garlands are exchanged, and there is a warm, joyful meeting. This is excellent for documentary photography — genuine emotion and relationship between families.
The groom's arrival and the baraat (procession) is another key moment before the ceremony begins. The dhol drummer, the family dancing, and the groom in his pagri (turban) and sherwani provide rich visual material.
Sikh brides traditionally wear red — deep crimson or ruby — with gold jewellery and a red dupatta. The contrast of the traditional red against the gold decorations of the Gurdwara, or against the green of a garden, creates striking portraits. Plan a dedicated portrait session before or after the ceremony to take advantage of good light.
Sikh wedding receptions are typically held in a separate venue — a banquet hall, hotel, or community centre. The evening involves speeches, dancing, and a meal. Documentary coverage of the reception and formal family groups make up the remainder of the photography coverage.
The bhangra dancing in the evening — energetic, loud, and joyful — is some of the best material of the entire event. Fast shutter speeds and good low-light performance matter here.
Each Gurdwara has its own rules about photography during the ceremony. Some are very accommodating; others restrict flash photography or movement near the Guru Granth Sahib. Always seek permission from both the Granthi and the family before attending, and be prepared to adapt your technical approach to the circumstances.
