Spring woodland photography sits in a narrow window between the bare trees of late winter and the dense green canopy of summer — and within that window, it produces some of the most beautiful family portraits available in the English landscape. The fresh acid-green of newly-opened leaves, the wildflower carpet beneath veteran oaks, and the soft filtered light of April and May combine to create a backdrop that no other season can offer.
The ideal window for spring woodland photography is relatively short — typically from late March to mid-May, with the most extraordinary conditions in the last two weeks of April. This is when:
By late May, the canopy has closed and the woodland floor darkens. By mid-May the bluebell season is typically ending. The window is genuinely short, and sessions planned for this period are worth booking early.
Woodland environments are naturally child-friendly in a way that studio or formal garden settings are not. Children explore, climb, peer under fallen logs, follow paths, and engage with the environment spontaneously — and all of this creates authentic, energetic photography that captures who they actually are. A child in a woodland is rarely bored, which solves one of the central challenges of family portrait photography.
The variety within a single woodland location is also remarkable: close canopy with dappled light, open glades with direct sun, stream crossings, wildflower clearings, veteran trees with roots and hollows. This variety means that a single 90-minute spring woodland session can produce images with a wider range of backgrounds and moods than a formal garden session of the same duration.
Light behaviour in spring woodland is different from open settings. Some principles:
The green and brown tones of woodland, combined with the whites, blues, and yellows of spring wildflowers, favour specific clothing choices:
Spring woodland is typically wet and uneven — dew on the grass until late morning, muddy paths after rain, and uneven tree roots. Wellies or waterproof boots for the walk in are sensible. Many families bring a change of shoes for the portraits themselves. Check with your photographer in advance whether a particular woodland is typically dry or wet underfoot at the planned session time.
Ancient woodland is relatively rare in the east of England — the landscape was largely cleared for agriculture — making the remaining examples particularly valuable. Hayley Wood, Buff Wood, and Wandlebury Country Park in Cambridgeshire all offer spring wildflowers and good canopy conditions. Bradfield Woods in Suffolk has exceptional early spring wildflower interest alongside its bluebells.
