Photographing teenagers is different. Not harder, not easier — different. The particular challenges of a teen portrait session are almost entirely about clothing and self-image: how the person feels about how they look, whether the clothes feel authentically theirs, and whether the session feels like their own or something imposed on them. Get those things right and the photographs are extraordinary. Get them wrong and the camera records every moment of discomfort.
📋 In this guide:
With most portrait subjects, the clothing is primarily a visual consideration — what looks good in photographs, what coordinates well with the setting. With teenagers, clothing is also a statement of identity, and how much ownership the teenager has over their clothing choices directly influences how they present in front of a camera.
A teenager forced into an outfit they find uncomfortable or inauthentic cannot hide that feeling. They do not know how to perform ease and naturalness in uncomfortable clothing the way an adult might, and the photographs — painfully — show exactly what they are feeling. The most effective approach is to involve them fully in the decision, with guidance rather than direction.
A workable framework that many families find effective:
The technical considerations for teenage portrait clothing are the same as for any portrait subject — but framed in terms that match how teenagers actually dress:
Age 13–14
Often the most self-conscious age range. Body image concerns are often acute at this point. Clothing that fits well without being tight, that they actively like, and that feels neither babyish nor out-of-reach sophisticated, will produce the most relaxed results.
Age 15–16
Aesthetic identity typically stronger by this age — most teenagers in this range have a clear sense of their style. Trust it. The challenge is usually parental concern rather than the teenager's uncertainty.
Age 17–18
Often photographed in milestone contexts — prom, leavers ceremony, pre-university, or a standalone portrait milestone. The clothing choices at this age are frequently already sophisticated and considered. Less guidance typically needed.
Prom / school leavers portraits
The formal event clothing is already chosen. Portraits before the event — in the prom dress or suit, before it is subject to an evening out — are when clothing is at its best. Make sure hair and makeup are complete before the portrait session begins.
Graduation portrait (sixth form / university)
A gown and academic dress is the traditional choice and photographs beautifully, particularly in architectural settings. Under the gown is usually seen — a white or light-coloured shirt or blouse is appropriate and will not compete visually.
General milestone 'I look like this now' portrait
Several families commission periodic portraits simply to document how their child looks at a specific age. The most valuable brief here is their actual aesthetic — not dressed up, not dressed down, just dressed as themselves.
Group sessions with friends are often commissioned around milestone events — prom, sixth form leaving, summer before university. These sessions have a different energy from solo portraits: higher, louder, more movement, more laughter, and more clothing variety to navigate.
For group friend sessions, clothing coordination is less important than individual choice, but a loose shared anchor helps visual cohesion:
