Warwickshire is the Heart of England in more than name — geographically central, and possessed of a landscape that combines the best of the English Midlands: the ancient Forest of Arden (Shakespeare's own landscape), the medieval castle town of Warwick, the Regency spa elegance of Leamington, and the limestone edge where the county meets the Cotswolds. For family photography, it provides unusual variety within a small geographic area.
My approach is natural and unhurried — I follow families rather than directing them, photograph the real interactions rather than posed arrangements, and use the light and landscape of Warwickshire's particular character to frame what actually matters: the connection between the people I'm photographing.

Medieval Warwick
Warwick Castle, the medieval bridge over the Avon, and the Mill Garden between them form one of England's most complete riverside castle settings. For families who want a location that reads as unambiguously English and historically distinguished, Warwick is essentially unmatched in the Midlands.
Forest of Arden woodland
The ancient Forest of Arden — the landscape of Shakespeare's As You Like It — survives in fragmentary but beautiful form across northern Warwickshire. The ancient oaks of Hay Wood, the bluebell floors of Ryton Wood, and the parkland of Packwood House and Baddesley Clinton provide woodland portrait settings of genuine historical depth.
Seasonal variety
Warwickshire's family portrait landscape changes dramatically through the year — bluebell woodland in late April, golden hour on the Avon meadows in June and July, autumn colour in the Arden in October, and the stark beauty of frost-covered parkland in January. Each season has its own photographic character.
Shakespeare country context
Stratford-upon-Avon's global recognition as Shakespeare's birthplace gives Warwickshire family photographs a contextual resonance that many families — particularly those with international connections — value highly. The RST on the Avon is one of Britain's most internationally recognised riverside settings.
Locations
Warwick Castle & Town
Warwick's medieval town centre — with the castle rising above the River Avon, the old bridge, and the ancient streets of the town — is among England's most photogenic small towns. The castle grounds, the Mill Garden beside the river, and the Eastgate provide medieval grandeur for family portraits within a compact walkable area.
Stratford-upon-Avon
Shakespeare's birthplace town provides one of England's most recognisable riverside settings for family photography: the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on the Avon, the Holy Trinity Church across the water meadow, and the half-timbered streets of the town centre. The Stratford greenway along the former railway line is a quiet cycling path with countryside feel minutes from the town centre.
Ragley Hall Estate
Ragley Hall near Alcester is a notable Warwickshire estate with extensive parkland, lake, and formal garden settings available for portrait sessions. The combination of the Baroque house, the parkland lake, and the mature estate woodland provides self-contained variety for family portrait sessions of high photographic quality.
Heart of England Countryside
Warwickshire's gentle agricultural landscape — the sandstone and red-clay farms of the Feldon south of the Avon, the wooded valleys of the Arden north of it, and the limestone edge where Warwickshire meets the Cotswolds — provides quiet countryside family portrait settings away from the county's tourist centres.
Yes — Warwickshire is a regular destination. I photograph natural family portraits across the county, from Warwick Castle's river setting to Stratford-upon-Avon's historic streets and the quiet Arden countryside. Contact me to discuss locations and dates.
Warwick town itself is exceptional — the combination of the castle, the river bridge, and the Mill Garden provides immense variety within a small area. Stratford-upon-Avon's Avon riverside in the hour before sunset is outstanding. For woodland portraits, the Arden countryside north-west of Warwick is beautiful in spring and autumn. I can help you choose the right location for your family.
Yes — I photograph at Ragley Hall, Charlecote Park (National Trust), Upton House, and other Warwickshire estate settings. Some require advance permission or small access fees for photography; I can advise on the process for each venue when you book.
I don't try to. My most successful family sessions with young children are ones where I follow the children rather than direct them — moving with their natural play, building rapport over the first 15 minutes, and photographing the real dynamics of your family. The images that matter most from any family session are usually the unposed ones.
Late October to early November, when the deciduous woodland of the Arden (Hay Wood, Ryton Wood, Oversley Wood) is at peak autumn colour, is exceptionally beautiful for family portraits. I also particularly recommend the bluebell season in late April — Warwickshire's woodland floors are spectacular.
