Buckinghamshire contains some of England's most beautiful landscape for family photography — the Chiltern Hills' dramatic chalk escarpment, ancient beech woodland at Burnham Beeches and Ashridge, the classical landscape garden at Stowe, and the Thames at Marlow. Within 40 minutes of London, Buckinghamshire families have access to countryside photography settings of genuine quality.
My approach to family photography is natural and relaxed. I don't pose families into formal configurations — I work with how families actually interact, following play, conversation, and movement to create photographs that capture the particular warmth and dynamic of each family. The best family portraits are the ones that look effortless.

Ancient woodland light
The beech woodland of the Chilterns — particularly at Burnham Beeches and Ashridge — creates a filtered, luminous light through the canopy that is exceptionally flattering for family portraits. In autumn, the copper-gold colour transforms family photographs into images of extraordinary warmth.
Four seasons of variety
Buckinghamshire's landscape photographs beautifully in all four seasons — bluebell woodland in spring, sun-dappled beech canopy in summer, copper and gold leaf in autumn, and the stark sculptural quality of bare winter trees and frost-covered chalk grassland in December and January.
Proximity to London
Buckinghamshire families are often London commuters who want countryside family portraits without driving three hours. The Chilterns are 40 minutes from Marylebone. I can photograph your family in a genuinely beautiful natural setting within an easy weekend morning drive.
Varied photographic settings
Buckinghamshire packs unusual variety into a small county: chalk downland, beech hangers, parkland, river meadows, and formal garden settings all within 30 minutes of each other. I can create genuinely varied family photographs within a single session by moving between distinct environments.
Locations
Chiltern Hills AONB
The Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty runs across the southern edge of Buckinghamshire from just above Wendover to the Thames at Marlow. Ashridge Estate, Wendover Woods, and the escarpment viewpoints above Princes Risborough provide genuinely spectacular scenery for family portraits in every season.
Stowe Gardens
Stowe National Trust garden is one of England's great landscape gardens — 18th-century English landscape design at its most ambitious, with temples, lakes, and woodland forming a setting of poised, classical beauty. The gardens are particularly beautiful in early morning light and at autumn colour.
Burnham Beeches
Burnham Beeches is one of England's most distinctive ancient woodlands — ancient pollarded beech trees of extraordinary sculptural character, managed for six centuries to create a landscape that resembles nothing else in the Home Counties. The character of these trees in autumn and winter light is exceptional for family portraits.
Thames Valley & Marlow
The Thames at Marlow forms the southern boundary of Buckinghamshire — and provides some of the county's most immediately picturesque settings, with the suspension bridge, the Compleat Angler, and broad riverside meadows offering consistent classic English family portrait backgrounds.
Yes — Buckinghamshire is a regular destination. I photograph natural family portraits across the county, from the Chilterns' escarpment walks and ancient woodland to the Thames Valley's riverside meadows and the parkland around Aylesbury. Contact me to discuss locations and dates.
The Chiltern Hills offer the greatest variety — Wendover Woods for conifer forest light, the Ashridge Estate for classic English autumn colour, and the chalk escarpment for open sky and long views. Burnham Beeches is uniquely atmospheric. For formal garden settings, Stowe is exceptional. I can help you choose a location that suits your family.
The golden hour — the first hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset — provides the most beautiful natural light for outdoor family portraits. I schedule sessions at these times whenever possible. For families with young children, the golden hour before sunset is usually most practical.
Yes — I photograph newborn sessions at your home, milestone family sessions, and natural lifestyle family portraits with babies and young children across Buckinghamshire. For newborns, home sessions in the first two weeks after birth are recommended.
There's no limit on family size. I photograph intimate couples, families with children of all ages, extended family gatherings, and multi-generational groups. The Family Session and Full Day packages are designed to accommodate all family configurations.
