Colour choice for a headshot has a greater impact on the final image than most people anticipate. The right outfit colour keeps attention on your face. The wrong one competes with it, dates the image, or creates technical problems in the editing room.
In-person, colour is experienced with full sensory context — room lighting, textures, movement. In a photograph, you have two dimensions and fixed available light. Colours that look sophisticated in person can overpower or flatten in a photograph. Colours that seem boring in a wardrobe sometimes produce the most polished headshots.
Solid, mid-depth tones almost always work. Extremes — very bright, very pale, very patterned — require careful handling.
Deep navy blue
The most universally reliable headshot colour. Reads as authoritative, trustworthy, and contemporary. Photographs cleanly on almost any background.
Charcoal or mid-grey
Neutral without being invisible. Keeps focus on your face, suits most complexions, and works across industries.
Teal and slate blue
Slightly more distinctive than plain navy — still professional, but with a character that reads well in digital contexts.
Forest green or olive
Increasingly common in creative and tech sectors. Photographs with depth and warmth without being distracting.
Burgundy and deep plum
Flattering on warmer and medium complexions — adds richness without overwhelming. Avoid on very pale backgrounds.
Classic white or soft cream
Works well when you have a clearly defined background (studio backdrop). On plain white backgrounds, avoid — the contrast disappears.
Camel or warm tan
Works well for personal brand and business portrait contexts. Has a friendly warmth without being casual.
Bright white on white background
The garment disappears into a white studio backdrop. Save it for location or dark background setups.
Neon or overly saturated colours
Red, electric blue, acid yellow — these draw the eye away from your face and create colour cast on skin in close-up framing.
Patterns and busy prints
Stripes, florals, logos, and large patterns distract. They also date quickly — your headshot should have a long useful life.
Colours that blend with your background
If your photographer uses a grey backdrop, wearing grey makes you disappear at the shoulders. Always discuss background colour before choosing your outfit.
Colours that clash with your complexion
Certain greens and yellows create unflattering colour reflections on skin tones. When in doubt, go neutral.
Background colour should be discussed before your headshot session. If you are shooting on a plain studio backdrop, ask your photographer what colour they use most frequently and choose your outfit accordingly. Common combinations:
The safest approach is to bring two or three outfit options to your session. Your photographer can advise on the spot based on the actual lighting setup and background being used. Having choices also gives you flexibility if you want looks for different professional contexts — one outfit for LinkedIn, another for your company's team page.
