Most professionals have one of three headshot situations: a photograph taken at a company away day five years ago in unflattering hotel ballroom light; a selfie or cropped personal photo that doesn't quite work for a professional context; or no photograph at all. Each of these situations costs something measurable. The LinkedIn algorithm consistently shows profiles with photographs more frequently than those without. First-impression research suggests that people form assessments of competence, warmth, and trustworthiness from a face within 50–100 milliseconds — and a poor photograph creates a negative first impression that every subsequent interaction has to overcome.
A good professional headshot achieves three things simultaneously: it looks like you (updated, accurate), it communicates confidence without aggression, and it works in the context where it will be seen. The third criterion is the one most often neglected. A photograph that looks excellent printed large on a conference backdrop may not work as a small circle on a LinkedIn mobile screen. A photograph that works beautifully for a creative industry portfolio may not convey the gravitas expected in a financial services context. Understanding the specific context for your headshot — and calibrating background, expression, clothing, and lighting accordingly — is what a good headshot photographer actually does.
The most common complaint about professional headshots is that they look stiff or artificial. This is almost always a lighting problem. Hard directional studio lighting creates shadows that emphasise facial lines and give subjects an uncomfortable, over-lit appearance that reads as unnatural on screen. Good headshot photographers use either large softboxes that approximate the quality of natural window light, or actual natural light, to create the luminous, even illumination that makes subjects appear at ease. I work primarily with natural light and portable diffused artificial lighting that replicates it.
A professional headshot session costs between £150 and £500 in most UK cities. The images from that session, if properly done, remain current and usable for three to five years. For any professional whose business or career is driven by personal reputation — consultants, lawyers, accountants, creative leads, executives, freelancers — the value of a strong first impression across thousands of LinkedIn impressions, email signatures, press appearances, and client proposals makes the investment straightforwardly rational. The more client-facing your role, the clearer the return.
I recommend updating your professional headshot whenever you have changed significantly in appearance from your current photograph; when you have changed role, industry, or career direction; or when your current photograph was taken more than three years ago. For executives with significant media exposure — speaking at conferences, being quoted in press — more frequent updates can be appropriate. The benchmark is simple: your headshot should be a photograph that accurately represents how you appear in a confident, professional context today.
