Many couples tell me their engagement shoot was the most fun they had in front of a camera since they were children. When it works well, it feels like a date with a photographer nearby. Here are ten things that make the difference between photographs you feel proud to share and photographs that feel… fine.
The photographs will feel more genuine if the backdrop has meaning — the park where he proposed, the village you grew up in, the riverside walk you do every Sunday morning. Location chemistry shows in photographs.
Wear something you feel comfortable in, not something you bought specifically for the shoot. Couples who are comfortable in their clothes move naturally. Avoid matching outfits, but coordinate colours loosely — cream and navy, for example, rather than identical jumpers.
The best light for outdoor photography is the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset — the ‘golden hour.’ Evening sessions in summer (7–8:30pm) produce soft, warm, flattering light. Midday sessions in direct sun are harder to work with.
The first few minutes of any session feel slightly awkward. This is completely normal. The photographs get better the longer you're together — so don't judge by the first ten frames. Trust that your photographer knows how to work through this.
Walking is the simplest thing, and it works — movement creates natural body language. But if there's something you genuinely do together (a picnic, a favourite coffee, something from your story) bringing it creates real moments.
A location with open space, some shade, and interesting textures gives a photographer options. Gardens, riverside paths, urban streets — variety keeps the gallery from looking monotonous.
Your photographer will direct you, but the best moments happen when you forget the lens is there. Tell each other something — a silly story, your first-date memory, a secret. Real laughter is never faked convincingly.
A 90-minute session gives time for travel between two locations, the natural warm-up at the beginning, and a golden-hour finale. Don't schedule it between two other commitments.
An engagement shoot builds trust between you and your photographer before the wedding. You'll know how they give direction, they'll know how you both respond to the camera. The wedding photography will be better for it.
Engagement photographs are designed to be shared — for save-the-dates, on your wedding website, on Instagram, framed for the reception. Think about how you'll use them when booking, so the photographer knows what format to deliver.

Wedding photography in England typically ranges from £1,500 to £4,000+ for a full day. Price depends on experience, coverage hours, and whether albums or engagement shoots are included. Most photographers charge between £2,000–£3,000 for 8–10 hours of coverage.
For peak season (May–September), book 12–18 months in advance. For autumn and winter weddings, 9–12 months is usually sufficient. Popular photographers at popular venues fill up fast — as soon as you have a date and venue confirmed, start reaching out.
Most professional wedding photographers deliver 400–800 edited images for a full-day wedding. The exact number depends on coverage hours, how many guests there are, and the photographer's editing style. Quality matters more than quantity — a curated gallery of 500 images tells the story better than 1,500 unedited files.
A second photographer is helpful if you want simultaneous coverage of getting-ready moments in different locations, multiple angles during the ceremony, or more candid coverage during the reception. It adds cost but significantly increases the variety and completeness of your gallery.
Documentary (reportage) wedding photography captures moments as they happen — the photographer observes and doesn't intervene. Editorial photography involves deliberate direction: placing you in good light, shaping compositions, creating intentional portraits. Most photographers blend both styles throughout the day.
