Colour coordination makes a significant difference to the cohesion and timelessness of family portraits. The goal isn't matching outfits — it's choosing a palette that works together, photographs beautifully against your chosen backdrop, and doesn't date quickly.
In a group photograph, individual clothing colours combine into an overall visual impression. A family in clashing colours draws the eye to the clothing rather than the faces and expressions. A family in a coordinated palette creates a sense of unity without looking contrived.
Colour also interacts with your background. Bright oranges against autumnal trees compete visually; soft creams and taupes against the same backdrop complement it. The right palette depends partly on what your chosen location looks like and what season you're shooting in.
Choose 3–4 tones from your palette and assign each family member a primary colour within it. Not uniform outfits, but each person's choices staying within the palette. The result looks intentional without looking costumed.
Your palette should work with both your backdrop and the season:
Within a neutral palette, texture variation adds visual richness. A family where everyone wears cream — in linen, cotton jersey, woven knitwear, and velvet respectively — creates far more visual interest than the same family in identical cream t-shirts.
Layering pieces (a cardigan over a dress, an open shirt over a plain top) also photographs well and gives warmth for outdoor winter sessions.
I'm happy to advise on colour palettes for your specific location and season before your family session. Get in touch when you book and I'll send through detailed styling guidance.
