Props in family photography can either enrich the images or derail them entirely. The difference lies in how they're used. Props that emerge naturally from who the family is — a child's favourite toy, a book both parents have read, a blanket used since babyhood — add authentic texture. Props chosen to make photographs look more "styled" usually look exactly like that: chosen for the photograph, not genuinely part of the family.
Professional photographers who use props most effectively use them sparingly and personally. A well-chosen prop does two things: it gives people something natural to interact with (which produces natural body language and expressions), and it adds context to the image that speaks to the family's actual life rather than a generic idea of "family."
The worst prop choices are usually the ones bought or borrowed specifically for the session with no connection to the family's life — a vintage bicycle, a chalkboard sign, a woven basket. These feel like set dressing rather than storytelling, and after a few years the family will notice what doesn't belong.
| Prop type | Why it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Child's favourite toy | Creates genuine interaction and comfort, especially for young children who might otherwise feel self-conscious | A well-loved soft toy, a current obsession (dinosaur, tractor) |
| A favourite family book | Encourages reading together naturally — creates intimate, connected setups | A picture book both parents read at bedtime |
| A blanket or picnic rug | Creates a natural base for sitting setups; encourages closeness and comfort | A family blanket used for garden picnics |
| A kite or ball | Movement activities produce natural, active photographs — especially for children who struggle to stay still | A simple kite, a football, bubbles |
| Food or snacks | A genuine picnic context creates relaxed, natural images and keeps energy up | Fruit, simple finger food — not elaborate picnic staging |
| A musical instrument | Works if it genuinely belongs to someone in the family; creates natural activity | A child's guitar, a keyboard they actually play |
Families with babies and toddlers
For very young children, the most effective 'props' are toys that keep attention and provide interaction. A favourite rattle, a soft toy being held, a child being offered and then choosing between two objects — these create natural expressions and engaged interaction.
Families with older children
Activities work better than static objects for older children. A football, a kite, a frisbee, or even permission to climb something at the location gives children a focus that lets natural energy and personality emerge. The resulting images are active and real.
Extended family groups
For large groups, props that give people something to do naturally while groupings are assembled — a blanket to sit on, a game in progress — are far more effective than asking 15 people to stand in position and wait. An active group is an easier group to photograph.
The most timeless family photographs are usually of people rather than things. If you're uncertain whether a prop adds to the images or merely to the planning, leave it at home. The family's faces, relationships, and genuine interactions are always more interesting than any object in the frame.
