Cambridge is one of England's most extraordinary places to get married — a city of medieval colleges, riverside meadows, and streets with centuries of history. Whether you want a chapel ceremony in one of the university's famous colleges, a licensed civil ceremony in a grand city-centre hotel, or a countryside wedding a short drive away, this guide covers everything you need to know about planning a wedding in Cambridge in 2026.
Before planning any other detail, both you and your partner need to give formal notice of your intention to marry. This is a legal requirement regardless of whether you are having a civil or religious ceremony.
Cambridge offers several distinct ceremony options with different legal and logistical requirements:
Cambridgeshire Register Office is at Shire Hall on Castle Hill. Civil ceremonies here are simple, short, and legally binding — typically 20–30 minutes. The registrar conducts the ceremony and signs the marriage certificate. Register office ceremonies are the most affordable option and can be combined with a separate celebration event at any venue.
Many Cambridge hotels, historic buildings, and event spaces are licensed by Cambridgeshire County Council to hold civil marriage ceremonies. At a licensed venue, a registrar attends to conduct and register the legal ceremony. Popular licensed venues include University Arms Hotel, Hotel du Vin, and various country house estates. Registrar fees are in addition to the venue fee.
If either partner has been baptised in the Church of England, has attended services at a specific church for over six months, or was on the electoral roll of the parish at any point, they can marry in that church. Cambridge has several beautiful C of E churches: Great St Mary's (the University Church), St Bene't's (Cambridge's oldest building), and All Saints' are among the most historic. College chapel weddings (King's, Clare, Pembroke, Trinity) are also C of E ceremonies requiring a college connection.
Cambridge has registered religious buildings for other faiths — Catholic, Jewish, Quaker, and non-conformist communities. Contact the specific institution for their requirements. Civil law requires a legal ceremony (civil or C of E) for the marriage to be registered, which some faiths separate from their own religious blessing ceremony.
Cambridge Jewish community ceremonies follow their own tradition and are legally registered. Contact Cambridge Synagogue directly for advice on venue, registration, and ceremony structure.
Photography tip: A short evening portrait session on The Backs — the tree-lined lawns behind King's, Clare, and Trinity colleges beside the River Cam — is the most iconic Cambridge wedding photography experience. The best light here falls around 6–8pm on summer evenings and produces soft, golden, completely distinctive images that could only be made in Cambridge.
