Wedding morning preparation photography — getting ready — is often underestimated by couples and over-rushed on the day. Done well, the getting-ready session produces some of the most personal and intimate photographs of the whole day: the quiet moment before the ceremony, the hands of the mother doing up the dress, the laughter while getting ready with your closest friends. This guide covers how to make the most of your wedding morning photography.
The single factor that most affects the quality of getting-ready photography is the room itself. Dark hotel rooms with yellow tungsten lighting, cluttered surfaces, and no natural light produce very limited images — regardless of the photographer's skill. A bright room with large windows, natural light, and cleared surfaces produces beautiful images. Before the morning begins, ask someone — a bridesmaid, your mum, anyone — to:
The moment the dress goes on is one of the most photographed sequences of the wedding morning — and it is often rushed. If you have a corseted back, a long zip, covered buttons, or a complex arrangement, build at least 15 minutes into your timeline for this moment. The person doing up the dress (who should be the person you most want in these photographs), slow actions, an uncluttered background, and good natural light produce images that will be among your most treasured from the day.
As a rough guide for bridal morning photography (this varies by wedding size and complexity):
Getting-ready photography works best with a smaller, closer group. Every person in the room is a potential subject — but also a potential distraction. Think about who you most want in these photographs: your mother, your sister, your closest friends. Also consider asking non-bridal-party people (parents, grandmothers) to be present specifically for the dressing moment rather than the whole morning — it makes that moment feel more deliberate.
I cover wedding morning preparation as part of all my wedding day packages. I'll work with you in advance on the timeline and room setup so the morning runs smoothly and produces beautiful, unhurried images.
