Golden hour — the period of warm, directional light just before sunset — produces family portraits that look entirely different from midday photography. The light is lower, softer, and warmer; shadows are longer and more flattering; everything looks a little more beautiful. This timing guide covers when golden hour falls across the UK seasons and how to plan your family session around it.
Harsh overhead midday sun creates problems for family photography: dark shadows under eyes and nose, squinting, and blown-out highlights on light clothing. Golden-hour light comes in at a low angle, wrapping around faces rather than casting down. The colour temperature shifts to warm amber and orange tones that are universally flattering — even in simple clothing on an ordinary day.
The practical difference is significant. A family session at noon in direct sun is uncomfortable for everyone, produces difficult-to-edit light, and requires far more technical intervention. A session at golden hour in open parkland produces images that look genuinely beautiful with relatively minimal post-processing.
| Season | Approx. golden hour (England) | Session availability |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | 6:30–8:30 pm (later as season progresses) | Good — mild temperatures + long evenings by May |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 8:30–10:00 pm | Late starts — can be family-unfriendly for small children |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 4:30–6:30 pm (earlier as season progresses) | Excellent — best light of the year + autumn colours |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 2:30–4:00 pm | Short but beautiful — lower sun gives dramatic raking light |
Times are approximate for central England (Cambridge/Midlands). Northern England and Scotland have slightly later sunsets in summer; southern England slightly earlier in winter.
Autumn is the single best season for family photography in England. The combination of warm amber foliage, earlier golden hour (easier for families with young children), and the extraordinary quality of late-September to October light produces family portraits that stand out from any other time of year.
Blue hour — the 20–30 minutes after the sun sets — provides beautiful cool blue tones that contrast with warm autumnal colours. Family sessions that run into blue hour often produce the most atmospheric images. It requires faster lenses and higher ISO settings, but an experienced photographer can use blue hour exceptionally well.
The best golden hour locations have open sightlines to the west or north-west — allowing you to use the low setting sun either directly in the composition or as side/rim lighting behind the family. Dense woodland can be limiting in lower light; open parkland, meadows, and hillsides work best.
How do I find out exactly when golden hour is on my session date?
Use the Photopills app or timeanddate.com/sun — both let you enter a specific location and date to get exact sunrise, golden hour, and sunset times. Your photographer should also confirm the timing in session prep notes.
What if it's cloudy on the day of our golden hour session?
Overcast light is actually excellent for family photography — it acts as a giant soft box, eliminating harsh shadows. You lose the warm glow of direct golden light, but you gain more flattering, even illumination. Most experienced photographers get beautiful results in both conditions.
Is golden hour practical for sessions with toddlers and babies?
In autumn and winter, yes — the session time aligns reasonably with daytime schedules. In late spring and summer, the timing can be tight around nap and bedtime routines. Discuss your child's schedule with your photographer and identify the session timing that doesn't conflict with peak grumpiness.
Should I wear warm or cool colours for a golden hour session?
Warm tones — rust, terracotta, mustard, deep olive, burgundy — harmonise with golden hour light. Bright whites can blow out slightly in direct gold light; navy and dark blues work well as contrast. Your photographer should give outfit guidance ahead of the session.
My family sessions are designed around the golden hour. I'll identify the best timing for your date, suggest a location that makes the most of the light, and send you outfit guidance before we meet.
