March and April sit at the cusp of the English year — the days growing longer, the countryside stirring after winter, and light that shifts from pale gold to that first warm promise of summer. As a wedding photographer, these months offer a canvas unlike any other: bare branches with the first buds, carpets of daffodils and wild garlic, and skies that move between drama and softness within a single hour.
There's a freshness to spring that photographs beautifully. Easter weddings, long-weekend celebrations, and April garden parties all have a particular quality — everything feels new. Green is vivid rather than deep, blossom trees offer a fleeting backdrop that lasts only days, and the sense of celebration feels especially earned after the grey of February.
Practically, spring also offers lower venue costs and greater photographer availability compared to the peak summer months. The trade-off is the weather, but that unpredictability is part of what makes the photos interesting.
The sun rises noticeably earlier through these months — by late April, golden hour arrives around 6:30am and the evening light lingers past 8pm. This creates generous windows for outdoor portraits. The light itself has a quality that summer cannot replicate: slightly lower in the sky, casting longer, softer shadows that flatter faces and add depth to landscape frames.
Overcast days — common in March — produce diffuse, even light that's flattering for portraits. I've found that some of my best close-up couple shots come from grey March days, where there's no harsh shadow to manage and the couple's faces are lit softly from all directions.
March weather is genuinely variable. You may have crisp sunny days with blue skies and a cold breeze, or you may have soft rain that turns the grounds into something cinematic. April is warmer and more settled but still unpredictable. My approach is simple: plan as if it will be beautiful, and have contingency plans ready. Every weather condition has a photographic opportunity within it.
March and April offer backdrops that simply don't exist at other times of year:
The challenge is temperature: mornings can be cool enough to need a layer, afternoons warmer. A few practical thoughts:
My approach to spring weddings centres on flexibility and preparation. I arrive early to assess the light conditions and have multiple location options planned, so we can move quickly if weather changes. I'll walk the grounds with you during your venue visit so we can identify the best spots for different lighting scenarios.
The key to a spring wedding is embracing the season rather than fighting it. Whether it's the excitement of blossom petals caught in the breeze, or the contemplative beauty of a couple sheltering under an umbrella, spring gives us full permission to be creative.
