England has some of the most beautiful and varied outdoor family photography locations in the northern hemisphere — from vast Norfolk beaches to ancient Cotswold villages, Yorkshire waterfalls to Surrey heathland. This guide covers the best locations by region, with practical notes on terrain, light, and what makes each spot work for family photography.
Natural variety
Backgrounds that change as you move through a space — open meadow, tree line, water, path — give a session a complete range of looks without leaving the location.
Manageable terrain
Young children, babies in carriers, and grandparents all require different terrain considerations. A flat, interesting location is better than a spectacular but difficult one.
Good evening light
The best outdoor family portraits are made in golden hour, 45–60 minutes before sunset. Locations facing west, or in open clearings where the last light reaches, photograph best.
Enough space for privacy
Family photography works best when you're not sharing the location with dog walkers and cyclists. Quieter spots, or popular spots in the early evening, give you the space to be genuinely present.
Grantchester Meadows
River Cam, open water meadows, wildflowers in summer. Timeless English countryside 15 minutes from Cambridge city centre. Excellent for golden-hour evening sessions.
Wandlebury Country Park
Ancient woodland and chalk downland. Dappled summer light, stunning bare winter branches, excellent autumn colour. Short walks from the car park to the best spots.
Anglesey Abbey Gardens (National Trust)
Formal and informal gardens with seasonal planting. The snowdrop walks in February are extraordinary. Excellent for spring blossom and summer lavender beds.
Cambridge Botanic Garden
Beautiful structured planting, lake, glasshouses. Accessible, central, and stunning across all seasons. Requires garden entry.
Coe Fen and Paradise Nature Reserve
Open grassland and river walks on the edge of Cambridge city centre. Cattle grazing, wildflowers, and river light — an unexpectedly rural feel minutes from the city.
Holkham Beach, Norfolk
Vast sandy beach with pine forest backdrop and extraordinary big skies. The walk from the car park is around 15 minutes across flat sand. Best at low tide.
Blakeney Point, Norfolk
Remote, wide-open coastal landscapes. The drive along the North Norfolk coast road combined with a session here produces genuinely cinematic family portraits.
Thetford Forest, Norfolk/Suffolk border
Ancient pine and mixed woodland with excellent dappled light year-round. Flat, accessible paths. Particularly beautiful in low-slant winter afternoon light.
Orford Ness, Suffolk (from Orford)
Dramatic estuary and shingle landscape — distinctive and unusual. The Orford riverside area is accessible without the need for the ferry and photographs beautifully.
Box Hill, Surrey
North Downs viewpoint with sweeping valley views. Mixed woodland is excellent in autumn. The summit area is accessible by car, which means minimal walking if needed.
Painshill Park, Surrey
18th-century landscape garden with lake, follies, and extraordinary variety. Very different from a natural outdoor setting but equally beautiful. Entry required.
Frensham Great Pond, Surrey
Open heathland and large pond. The birch and heather landscape is particularly striking in early morning light and in August when heather blooms purple.
South Downs near Ditchling Beacon
Rolling chalk hills and open skies. Beautiful wide-sky portraits, especially when clouds create moving light. Flatten walking shoes are needed — the paths are uneven.
Bourton-on-the-Water
The River Windrush through the village provides beautiful water reflections and stone bridge backdrops. Very accessible with young children. Busy in peak summer — early morning or evening sessions recommended.
Blenheim Palace grounds
The palace's parkland and lake offer grand-scale backdrops and beautiful formal gardens. Entry required; check photography permissions in advance.
Snowshill, Worcestershire border
Remote Cotswold village with open hillside and sweeping countryside views. The approach roads are steep; the location itself is excellent for golden-hour sessions.
Hardcastle Crags, West Yorkshire
Ancient oak woodland in a narrow valley, flat riverside paths, dappled light. One of England's most reliably beautiful woodland settings for family portraits.
Ribblehead, Yorkshire Dales
Dramatic open moorland framed by the famous viaduct. The sense of scale it creates — tiny family against enormous landscape — is unlike any other English location.
Aysgarth Falls, North Yorkshire
Three tiers of limestone waterfalls in autumn woodland. The sound, the movement, and the light all combine to create an extraordinary backdrop — and children love the rocks.
Howardian Hills, North York Moors edge
Rolling farmland, hedge-lined lanes, and distant views. A quieter alternative to the more-visited parts of Yorkshire with a quintessentially English countryside feel.
Tarn Hows, Lake District
Small lake surrounded by mixed woodland, with a circular walk of around 1.5 miles. Dramatic in autumn, beautiful in summer. Accessible path makes it manageable with younger children.
Rydal Water, Westmorland
One of the most photogenic small lakes in the Lake District — wooded shores, fells in the background, calm water reflecting everything. The path is relatively flat and well-maintained.
Aira Force, Ullswater
A waterfall surrounded by National Trust woodland. The walk to the main fall is around 20 minutes each way on a good path. Wet rock — exercise caution with young children at the edge.
Seasonality matters enormously for outdoor family photography. The same location can look completely different in April (blossom and new green growth), July (lush and warm), October (amber and gold), and January (bare, frost, low light). If you have a vision, book around the season rather than working with whatever season falls when it's convenient.
The best light for outdoor family portraits is consistently golden hour — the 45–60 minutes before sunset. In December and January, this is around 3–4pm. In July and August, it's close to 8–9pm, meaning evening sessions work beautifully with school-age children who aren't constrained by nap routines.
