Cambridge in summer is extraordinary for wedding photography. The golden hour stretches until 9:30pm in June, the city empties of tourists after 7pm, and the River Cam at dusk — with punts gliding under old stone bridges — is one of the most romantic settings in England. Summer also means open college gardens, punting ceremonies, and garden party receptions that make Cambridge entirely unlike any other wedding destination.
Cambridge is built from honey-coloured limestone that comes alive in the long summer light. In June and July, the sun sets due north-west — illuminating the west faces of the college buildings along King's Parade and The Backs in warm lateral light from around 7pm onwards. By 9pm, the shadows grow long and golden, and by 9:30 the light turns pink-amber and truly extraordinary.
Most summer wedding receptions end their formal programme by 8–9pm — which lands perfectly in the extended golden hour. A 20-minute escape with your photographer to The Backs, to the river, or to the college gardens during this window produces images that look more like paintings than photographs.
The Backs — the riverside meadows and gardens behind the colleges — are at their absolute best in summer. The river is full and green, cow parsley lines the banks in May and June, and the punts add movement and colour to the water. At 8–9pm in June, the college backs are often nearly deserted, and the light falling across the water is luminous and warm. This is the definitive summer Cambridge wedding photography location.
A summer wedding in Cambridge almost demands a punting portrait session — either as couple portraits during the reception, or as a full engagement shoot. The Mathematical Bridge at Queens' College, Clare Bridge (the oldest in Cambridge), King's College Bridge, and the Bridge of Sighs at St John's all provide extraordinary architectural frames. Photographed from the bankside in low summer light, a punt on the Cam is one of the most distinctively Cambridge images possible.
The meadows between Cambridge and Grantchester reach their lush peak in late June and July — when the grass stands knee-high, wild flowers bloom across the water meadows, and the river is edged with meadow sweet and purple loosestrife. Couples can punt or walk to Grantchester as part of their reception, creating a completely unique Cambridge summer wedding experience.
The Botanic Garden reaches peak colour in June with the Rose Garden and the Systematic Beds in full bloom. Summer evenings in the Botanic Garden — when the garden is closed to the public but accessible by private arrangement — provide exceptional portrait conditions: lush green backdrops, flowers in every direction, and the extraordinary domed Glasshouses as architectural interest.
Summer timing is different from other seasons. Key considerations for your photographer:
Summer suits gardens and outdoor spaces. The finest summer wedding venues around Cambridge include:
The Cambridge garden party wedding is a particular and wonderful thing — a format that plays perfectly to the city's strengths. Pimm's on the lawn, a string quartet on the terrace, punts arriving at a riverside garden, guests in morning suits and summer dresses, and a photographer documenting the whole relaxed afternoon in natural light.
Cambridge's late sunset means garden parties can run until 10pm while still evening portrait sessions. This is one of the great advantages of a Cambridge summer wedding that venues in short-day climates simply cannot offer.
Planning a summer wedding in Cambridge?
As a Cambridge wedding photographer, I love the long summer evenings and the extraordinary light they bring to the city's colleges and riverside. I'd love to talk through your plans and share my favourite summer locations and timings.
