A maternity photoshoot is one of the most meaningful photography sessions you'll ever have — a celebration of your body and the person growing inside it. Choosing the right outfit can feel surprisingly daunting, but it doesn't need to be. This complete guide covers everything you need to know about dressing for your maternity session in England.
Whether you want something flowing and ethereal, fitted and bold, casual and natural, or timeless and minimal — there's an approach that will work beautifully for you. The best maternity outfit is one that makes you feel genuinely confident and comfortable at this remarkable stage of life.
📋 What's in this guide:
The aesthetic of your maternity session shapes everything — your location, your outfit, the mood of the images. Before choosing your clothing, it helps to have a sense of the style you're drawn to. Most maternity sessions fall into one of four broad aesthetics:
Flowing & Ethereal
Long, flowing gowns and skirts in soft fabrics — chiffon, organza, lightweight crepe. Often photographed outdoors at golden hour in open fields, woodland, or by water. Think: romance, light, movement.
Wear: Long chiffon or tulle gown, flowy maxi skirt + simple top, soft wrap dress. Earth tones, dusty pinks, sage green, ivory.
Minimal & Modern
Clean lines, understated outfits, focused on the bump and the emotion. Often photographed with simple backgrounds — plain walls, bedrooms, clean natural light. Think: timeless, intimate.
Wear: Fitted jersey dress, soft wrap top, simple monochrome bodysuit. Neutrals: white, cream, black, warm grey.
Natural & Lifestyle
Relaxed, at-home or outdoor sessions that feel like real life — in your garden, in a park, in the spaces that mean something to you. Think: authentic, warm, unposed.
Wear: Comfy but coordinated — your nicest maternity jeans, a soft linen top or wrap, a favourite dress you already own. Partner and siblings dressed to coordinate.
Artistic & Bold
Dramatic fabrics, rich colours, striking compositions. Body-positive and powerful. Think: celebration, pride, statement.
Wear: Rich jewel-toned gown, form-fitting dress in deep colour, fabric draped intentionally. Deep burgundy, emerald green, cobalt blue.
This is the most personal decision in maternity photography. There is no right answer — only what feels right for you. All three approaches can produce extraordinary images.
💌 A note from Yana: Whatever exposure level you choose, I always adapt the session to what feels natural and comfortable for you in the moment. You never need to decide everything in advance — we can change approaches as we go.
Colour choice in maternity photography is particularly important because: your outfit will often interact with natural landscape backgrounds, you may be bringing a partner and/or existing children (who should coordinate), and certain colours flatter the particular shape and change of pregnancy more than others.

The right fabric can transform a maternity photo from good to remarkable. Fabrics that move, drape, and catch light tend to be the most cinematic. Here's what to look for:
Chiffon and organza
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The classic maternity session fabric. Lightweight, billows beautifully in even slight breezes, catches light spectacularly. Ideal for flowing gowns.
Jersey and stretch knit
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Form-fitting, comfortable, emphasises the bump shape clearly. Drapes well. Great for the minimal/modern aesthetic.
Linen
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Natural, textured, and breathable. Beautiful for casual/lifestyle sessions. Has a gentle, organic quality that photographs well in natural settings.
Velvet
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Luxurious and rich. Absorbs light in a beautiful way that avoids shine. Particularly striking in jewel tones. Best for cooler months.
Silk or silk-look satin
⭐⭐⭐
Stunning in movement but can look shiny or cold under bright light. Requires careful lighting. Beautiful in the right conditions.
Structured cotton
⭐⭐⭐
Clean and accessible but doesn't move as beautifully as the others. Fine for casual/lifestyle sessions but less effective for artistic shots.
🌸 Spring (March–May)
Everything is coming alive — blossom, bluebells, fresh greenery. Soft pastels and earthy neutrals are perfect. Lightweight layers let you stay comfortable as temperatures shift.
Ideas: Blush or dusty pink gown, sage linen dress with a light wrap, cream chiffon with wildflower backdrop.
☀️ Summer (June–August)
Golden hour is late and long. White, ivory, and warm pastels glow beautifully. Lighter fabrics keep you comfortable in warmer temperatures.
Ideas: White or ivory chiffon gown, dusty rose maxi dress, soft blue flowing wrap for coastal sessions.
🍂 Autumn (September–November)
The most visually spectacular season for maternity photography in England. Rich tones complement the foliage perfectly — this is rust and burgundy season.
Ideas: Rust or burnt orange gown against golden leaves, deep burgundy velvet, deep teal wrap over a bare bump in woodland.
❄️ Winter (December–February)
Bare winter trees, golden low light, frosted mornings. Richer, deeper colours photograph beautifully. Indoor or studio sessions open up more options. Layers are essential for outdoor comfort.
Ideas: Deep forest green velvet gown, ivory cable knit for cosy indoor shots, deep plum chiffon for a striking outdoor statement.
Planning your maternity session?
I'd love to help you plan every detail — from location and timing to outfit choices that reflect exactly how you want to remember this season of life.
Maternity Photography →Your partner's outfit should complement yours without competing with it. The focus of maternity photography is always the bump and the connection between the couple — your partner's role is to be present and complement the scene, not to stand out separately.
Including an existing child or children adds warmth and a genuine sense of your growing family. The key is coordination without uniformity — they should feel like they belong in the same image, without looking like a matching set.
✗ Anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious
Confidence and comfort are the most important things in a maternity session. An uncomfortable outfit = uncomfortable energy in the photos. Always prioritise how you feel.
✗ Logos, text, and busy prints
These draw the eye away from what matters — you, your bump, and the connection. Simple, clean outfits are almost always more photogenic.
✗ Brand new outfits you haven't worn before
If you haven't worn it, you don't know how it will feel or behave. Especially important late in pregnancy when comfort fluctuates — test any new outfit in advance.
✗ Anything too tight for comfort
A fitted dress that shows the bump shape is beautiful; clothing that is genuinely restrictive will affect your posture, breathing, and comfort throughout the session.
✗ Horizontal stripes
These can create optical interference patterns (moiré) in photography. Avoid them, especially in fine or regular patterns.
Q: Do I need to buy special maternity clothes for my photoshoot?
Not necessarily. Many clients use a gown or dress rented or borrowed specifically for the session, while wearing their own comfortable clothes for the rest. I can also advise on affordable options — some photographic gowns can be hired for surprisingly little. You don't need to invest heavily unless you want to.
Q: When is the best time to have a maternity photoshoot?
Typically between 28 and 34 weeks, when the bump is clearly rounded and prominent but you're still comfortable enough to stand and move. However, every pregnancy is different — discuss with your midwife and photographer what feels right for you personally.
Q: Can I include my partner and/or children?
Absolutely, and I'd encourage it. A mix of solo shots showcasing you and your bump, couple shots with your partner, and family shots with existing children gives you the most complete, meaningful set of images.
Q: Should I wear my own maternity clothes or hire a gown?
Many mothers do both — one outfit from their own wardrobe (authentic, personal, comfortable) and one more elaborate gown that creates more dramatic images. Having two distinct looks gives you more variety and ensures a range of photographs from the same session.
Q: What if it rains?
In England, some planning must always accommodate weather! I'll have an indoor backup plan for your session, and for outdoor sessions I can work with dramatic skies and light drizzle (genuinely beautiful in photographs). We'll discuss contingency options when we plan your session.
