Booking a wedding photographer is one of the most significant spending decisions most couples make — and one of the least-researched ones. Unlike venues or catering, where people visit in person and ask detailed questions, many couples book photographers within a single conversation, based on a handful of Instagram posts and a gut feeling. Here are the mistakes that consistently lead to disappointment.
Every wedding photographer's website and social media contains their best fifteen images — carefully selected across months or years of work. The question is not whether they're capable of producing one or two extraordinary photographs. The question is what a complete gallery from a single wedding day looks like. Ask to see two or three full galleries from recent weddings at similar venues or in similar lighting conditions to yours. The average quality across 400–600 images is what you will actually receive.
The least expensive option is rarely the best decision for the most permanent record of your wedding day. This isn't snobbery — it's arithmetic. A photographer charging £600 will be either very new (limited experience handling complex light, large groups, or difficult venues), very part-time (photographing weddings as a side income without full investment in the craft), or working at a volume that makes your wedding one of many rather than a carefully considered commission.
There is a meaningful quality difference between the £600 and £1,500 price point that is visible in the work. Above approximately £1,800, the differences become more about style preference than base quality. Set a minimum quality threshold and then compare within that range by style and fit rather than price alone.
You will spend eight to twelve hours in closer proximity to your photographer than almost any other vendor. They will be present in your bedroom during the most intimate morning of your life. Their personality, their energy, and their working style will directly shape how relaxed you feel — and how natural your photographs look. Booking without meeting, even virtually, is a risk unnecessary to take.
The right photographer will be easy to talk to, genuinely interested in your wedding, and able to explain their approach clearly. You should not feel pressured during initial conversations. If a photographer seems transactional or difficult to engage before they've been booked, that dynamic is unlikely to improve on the wedding day.
A wedding photography agreement should clearly specify: the hours covered, the expected image delivery timeline, the format of delivery (USB, online gallery, prints), what happens if the photographer cannot attend on the day, and the copyright or usage rights for the images. Verbal agreements and handshake bookings are not enforceable and have left many couples with no recourse when things went wrong.
If a photographer is reluctant to provide a contract, this is itself a warning sign. Established professionals expect clients to read contracts and welcome questions about their terms.
Instagram is a highlight reel optimised for engagement, not a representative sample of working output. A photographer whose Instagram contains ten extraordinary images may have produced those over three years of work. Always check the primary portfolio website and ask for recent complete galleries before making any booking decision.
Dark church? Marquee in July sun? Candlelit evening reception? Each presents specific technical challenges that experienced photographers have developed solutions for and inexperienced ones are figuring out on the day. Ask about their experience at venues similar to yours — particularly regarding the lighting conditions involved.
Professional photographers carry multiple camera bodies, duplicate lenses for critical focal lengths, and additional memory cards. They should also be able to explain what happens if equipment fails on the day. This isn't paranoia — camera failures happen, and the difference between a professional and an amateur is largely whether the backup exists.
“Natural documentary photography” and “reportage photography” and “candid wedding photography” can mean meaningfully different things to different photographers. Ask specifically what percentage of the day is typically documentary versus directed or posed, how they handle group photographs, and whether they would describe their editing as warm-toned, neutral, or dark and moody. Look for consistency between what they say and what you see in full galleries.
Most licensed wedding venues require evidence of public liability insurance from all suppliers. A photographer operating without it may not be permitted to enter the venue on the day. Ask directly. Established professionals carry both public liability and professional indemnity cover.
Photographers at the quality level worth hiring typically book 12–18 months in advance for peak-season weekend dates. Couples who begin their search four months before their wedding frequently find their first, second, and third choices already unavailable. Begin the search as soon as the date and venue are confirmed.
