Cambridge University Botanic Garden is one of the finest garden photography locations in England. Founded in 1831 and spanning 40 acres, it combines formal structure, magnificent specimen trees, curated seasonal planting and open parkland in a single extraordinary setting. Every season produces something distinctively beautiful.
I photograph families, couples, engagement sessions and individual portraits in the Botanic Garden throughout the year. The key to exceptional garden photography is timing — knowing exactly which planting areas peak during which weeks, which light conditions suit which parts of the garden, and how to use seasonal colour as a natural element of composition rather than a background.
Sessions in the Botanic Garden work particularly well for families with young children — the gardens are fully accessible, naturally engaging for small people, and provide the kind of vibrant colour and softly beautiful backgrounds that transform family photographs from ordinary snapshots into something genuinely worth printing large.
April and May at the Botanic Garden are extraordinary — the cherry blossom walk, ornamental tulips and early flowering trees create walls of colour and fragrance. Spring sessions here are consistently among the most beautiful of the year.
The rose garden reaches its peak in late June and early July. The warm tones of the blooms against aged brick walls and formal hedges create a naturally romantic, high-quality backdrop for couples, engagement and portrait sessions.
August brings tall ornamental grasses, late perennial borders and the golden, slightly wild atmosphere of a garden fully in bloom. Warm evening light through the planting in August sessions is exceptional.
The Botanic Garden's mature tree collection turns extraordinary in October — maples, zelkovas and liquidambars in full copper and gold. Autumn family sessions here produce warm, deeply saturated images with a seasonal richness that is hard to find elsewhere.
The Garden's formal structure — yew hedges, paths and specimen trees — is most visible in winter. The glasshouses offer a warm, lush alternative backdrop for early-year family or couples sessions in any weather.
The rock garden provides height and texture rarely found in lowland Cambridge. The lake and its surrounding planting give genuine depth and perspective. Both work exceptionally for children and family sessions with natural backgrounds.

Yes — standard Botanic Garden admission applies for sessions. I can advise on the best timing to book and whether any special access (e.g. early opening) is available for photography sessions.
April–May for blossom is consistently my most sought-after period. Late June–July for roses. October for autumn colour. All seasons have distinct beauty — the key is knowing which planting areas are at their peak during any given week.
Standard handheld photography for personal sessions is permitted. For commercial use or tripod-based equipment some gardens have specific policies — I check all requirements with the garden in advance.
Very much so. The paths are pushchair-accessible, there is open grass space and the seasonal colour genuinely engages younger children. Some of my best family sessions have taken place in the Botanic Garden with toddlers and young children.
Yes — the Botanic Garden is well positioned on Trumpington Road and can be easily combined with sessions at nearby Parker's Piece, Grantchester Meadows or the Cam riverbank in a longer half-day package.
