Cambridge in autumn is stunning for engagement photography. The plane trees along The Backs turn amber and copper in October, the beech woodland at Wandlebury glows with low light, and the Anglesey Abbey garden reaches its most theatrical display of dahlia oranges and border golds. Here are the best locations and timing tips for autumn leaf engagement shoots near Cambridge.
Cambridgeshire isn't famous for dramatic autumn colour — it's a flat arable county, not the Lake District. But in and around Cambridge city, pockets of exceptional colour do appear, and they can be extraordinary when the light is right. Typical timing:
The most spectacular autumn colour in Cambridge is along King's Backs — the London Plane trees that line the riverside walk turn a warm amber-gold in mid-October. The combination of golden leaves overhead, the River Cam below (still dark green), and the pale limestone college walls beyond creates an extraordinary tonal photograph. Best at low morning light, when the leaves seem lit from within.
The beech woodland in Wandlebury Country Park on the Gog Magog Hills is the finest autumn woodland photography location within striking distance of Cambridge. In mid to late October, the beeches turn a deep copper-orange that glows in afternoon light. The ancient hillfort earthworks give added texture and depth. Wandlebury is just 4 miles south of Cambridge and offers genuine woodland atmosphere without travelling far.
Anglesey Abbey near Lode transforms in October and November. The long allées of hornbeam and lime turn amber-gold, the dahlia borders (still sometimes in flower into early November) add orange and red, and the garden's classical sculptures stand among fallen leaves in scenes that look more like oil paintings than photographs. Of all the locations near Cambridge, Anglesey in autumn is perhaps the most theatrical and distinctive.
Wimpole's 3,000-acre Capability Brown landscape is superb in October — the limes and chestnuts of the main avenue turn gold, the parkland grass turns russet, and the scale of the landscape allows for dramatic wide shots with the Palladian hall in the distance. For a more intimate atmosphere, the walled kitchen garden with its espalier fruit trees combines colour, texture, and architecture beautifully.
Both Hayley Wood and Buff Wood near East Hatley contain ancient woodland with autumn colour that rivals anywhere in Cambridgeshire. The hornbeam and hazel understorey turns yellow, and the leaf litter makes excellent photographic texture. Both are working nature reserves — not groomed parkland — which gives sessions here a genuinely wild, atmospheric feel.
