The first year of a child's life involves more physical change than any other twelve-month period in human existence. Newborn to standing in a year. Professional milestone photography documents these stages — not every month, but the moments that mark real developmental transitions — producing a coherent record of the first chapter of a person's life.
| Age | Milestone | Session character |
|---|---|---|
| 5–14 days | Newborn | Deeply asleep, curled, tiny — classic posed newborn style |
| 6–8 weeks | First smiles | Social smiling begins — the first responsive photoshoot possible |
| 3 months | Head control, visual tracking | Tummy time, bright eyes open, interacting with the world |
| 6 months | Sitting (with support) | Can be propped sitting, more interaction, great expressions |
| 8–9 months | Sitting independently | Active, mobile, grabbing, exploring — joyfully chaotic to photograph |
| 10–12 months | Standing, first steps | Pulling up on things, walking supported, the cusp of toddlerhood |
| 12 months | First birthday | Cake smash optional — a significant landmark and wonderful session |
The most popular approach is three sessions across the first year: newborn (5–14 days), mid-year (around 6 months), and first birthday. This creates a clear visual narrative — the newborn, the baby discovering the world, and the one-year-old who has arrived as a person with preferences and a personality.
Some photographers offer "milestone packages" that bundle three or four sessions at a reduced per-session rate. These are worth asking about if you're certain you want multiple sessions — the saving on a committed package can be meaningful.
Cake smash sessions — where a baby is presented with a small personal cake and photographed as they explore it — have become a widely practised milestone tradition. They work best between 11 and 14 months, when babies have the motor control to really engage with the cake, and the enthusiasm for getting involved. The results are reliably delightful. A cake made by a bakery specifically for the purpose (often called a "smash cake"), a simple colour scheme, and a clean white background are the standard setup.
Babies born in autumn have the advantage of two wonderful seasons in their first year: winter (cosy, indoor, warm light, Christmas context) and the following spring and summer (blossom, fresh colour, golden evenings). Babies born in spring move through a beautiful sequence: spring → summer → autumn first birthday. Thinking about what season your key milestone sessions fall in can help you choose locations that are at their peak.
Newborn sessions are almost always better at home or in a specialist studio — the warmth and comfort requirements make outdoor sessions impractical for very young babies. From around 3 months, outdoor sessions become possible in warm weather, and from 6 months most babies are happy outdoors in any mild conditions.
Home sessions maintain continuity — photographed in the same house at newborn, 6 months, and 12 months, the images document the same physical space as the baby grows through it. Outdoor sessions offer seasonal variety and better light.
Should I include parents and siblings in milestone sessions?
Yes, particularly for the early sessions. A baby alone tells one story; a baby with parents' hands, or with an older sibling, tells a richer and more contextual one. Including family members also means the images remain meaningful to the whole family rather than just to the child.
How long are baby milestone sessions?
Typically 60–90 minutes for sessions from 6 weeks onwards. Newborn sessions are longer (2–4 hours) due to settling requirements. Sessions are kept shorter than adult sessions because babies tire and reach their limits; quality over quantity of setups.
What if the baby is sick on the day?
Reschedule. A sick baby means a stressed baby and stressed parents — the resulting images rarely reflect the sessions you wanted. Most photographers have a policy covering rescheduling for illness; this is particularly expected for baby sessions.
Is there a best time of day for baby sessions?
Mid-morning is most reliable — after the first feed and nap, before the mid-day tired period. If your baby has a predictable feeding and nap pattern, share this with your photographer and time the session to fall when your baby is typically at their most content.
