For a few precious weeks each spring, England's ancient woodlands are transformed by a soft blue haze that stretches as far as the eye can see. England has roughly 50% of the world's entire population of native bluebells — and in a good year, the season peaks in late April to mid-May, coating woodland floors in extraordinary colour.
For family photography, engagement shoots, and portrait sessions, the bluebell season is one of the most magical and sought-after times of year. Here's everything you need to know to make the most of it.
The bluebell season in England typically runs from mid-April to mid-May, but it varies by year, location, and altitude. Southern England tends to peak around the last week of April. Northern England and woodland at higher elevation peaks 1–2 weeks later.
Timing tip: In Cambridgeshire specifically, the best bluebell displays tend to peak in the last 10 days of April. By mid-May, the flowers are usually fading. The window for photographs is genuinely only 2–3 weeks — so book early.
⚠️ Booking note
Bluebell sessions fill up extremely quickly. I typically open spring bluebell session slots in February–March, and they are fully booked by early April. If you'd like a bluebell session this year, please enquire as soon as possible.

Shoot in overcast light
Bright direct sunlight creates harsh shadows in woodland and washes out the blue tones. An overcast or lightly cloudy day gives soft, even light that brings out the blue colour far more effectively. Golden hour (hour after sunrise or before sunset) is also magical — but requires careful timing.
Go low for the full carpet effect
The most impressive bluebell shots are taken from a low angle — crouching down to the level of the flowers makes the carpet appear to stretch to infinity. I position families and children low in the frame so the blue surrounds them completely.
Soft pastel outfits work beautifully
Soft creams, dusty pinks, sage greens, and pale blues all complement the bluebell tones perfectly. Avoid bright, saturated colours which compete with the flowers. White can work well on one child but becomes stark if everyone wears it.
Protect the flowers
Please stay on existing paths and don't crush the bluebells — they take years to recover. As your photographer, I'll always guide you to areas where we can achieve beautiful images without trampling the flowers.
The bluebell season palette is one of the most forgiving for clothing choices. My recommendations:
