Cambridge University graduation ceremonies — called General Admissions — take place in the Senate House on King's Parade. The ceremonies are formal, relatively brief, and entirely in Latin. Each student walks across the stage individually, kneels before the Vice-Chancellor, and is admitted to their degree. The combination of the historic building, the academic dress (subfusc plus gown), and the surrounding college buildings makes Cambridge graduation one of the most photographically distinctive in the world.
Because the ceremony is formal and quick-moving, the main opportunity for memorable photography is before and after — in front of colleges, along the Backs, on King's Parade, and in the Senate House gardens when these are accessible.
The single most important planning decision is timing. Graduation ceremonies are spread across several days in late June and early July. Your ceremony time determines what natural light is available. Late morning ceremonies with afternoon photography windows benefit from good summer light and lower crowds. Early afternoon ceremonies can coincide with the busiest tourist period in Cambridge.
If you have flexibility in scheduling your photographer, meeting before the ceremony — while you're dressed and before family fatigue sets in — produces fresher, more relaxed portraits than immediately after a formal ceremony when everyone is relieved it's over.
The classic locations serve a reason: the Senate House facade, King's College Chapel, the Wren Library bridge at Trinity, and the Backs along the river are among the most recognisable backdrops in English academic photography. These images communicate something specific about where you studied.
Beyond the obvious: individual college courtyards, particularly if you have a connection to the college, offer intimate settings away from crowds. The Mathematical Bridge at Queens' provides an unusual angle. The cobblestones of Senate House Passage create beautiful light in late afternoon. Your photographer should know Cambridge well enough to suggest alternatives if primary locations are congested.
Most graduates arrive with parents, partners, and siblings who have also dressed for the occasion. The family photographs matter as much as the solo graduate portraits. Plan a short window — fifteen to twenty minutes — specifically for these, separate from the more individual session time.
Grandparents who have travelled long distances to attend deserve to be included prominently. They are often quieter about requesting photographs; don't leave them out.
Under the gown, your subfusc is prescribed, but you have choices about colour and fit in your white shirt, dark trousers or skirt, and dark jacket. The gown photographs best over solid colours — avoid busy patterns that compete with the gown's visual weight. Shoes matter more than you'd expect: comfortable, well-maintained shoes visible below the gown's hem affect the overall polish of the photographs.
