Christmas family photographs are often the ones families treasure most — and also the ones that go wrong most reliably. Children who will not look at the camera, relatives with incompatible outfit choices, and a complete lack of decent light indoors. Here is how professional family photographers approach Christmas portraits.
December daylight in the UK lasts from roughly 8am to 4pm — and is often overcast, flat, or absent on the actual days families gather. Indoor Christmas lights are warm, charming, and completely insufficient for photography. For genuinely beautiful Christmas portraits, natural window light remains the best tool — overcast December light through a large window is diffused and soft. The period around 10am–2pm on a relatively bright December day provides the best combination of direction and quality.
Early December mornings with frost or mist, country parks with winter trees, and the days immediately following snowfall all provide magical outdoor settings. Children are almost always more natural and animated outdoors than in front of a Christmas tree indoors. A well-timed outdoor session on a clear December morning with golden low sun will produce images infinitely better than indoor portraits around a decorated tree.
Avoid pure white next to faces — it blows out in winter light and flattens skin tones. Deep greens, burgundy, navy, cranberry, and camel tones all work exceptionally well. Coordinate rather than match — family members in the same colour palette but different pieces look intentional rather than costumed.
Christmas mini sessions at professional photographers fill in October and early November — sometimes earlier. If you want professional Christmas family portraits, enquire no later than September for a guaranteed session slot in November or early December.
