Your first professional headshot session can feel unfamiliar — you may not know what to wear, what happens during the session, how long it takes, or what you'll get at the end. This guide takes you through every stage of a professional headshot session from enquiry to final images, so you arrive prepared, relaxed, and confident.
What you wear is the single most impactful decision you make before a headshot session. Here are the principles most professional headshot photographers follow:
A short conversation about your intended use, preferences, and any specific concerns (camera confidence, whether you have a 'better side', expressions you feel comfortable with). This is where you tell the photographer if you're nervous — experienced headshot photographers are used to working with clients who don't enjoy being photographed and have specific techniques to help.
The photographer sets up the camera position, background, and lighting for the session. A few test frames calibrate exposure and positioning before the main session begins. You'll typically see some of these early images to confirm the general look before proceeding.
The photographer works through a variety of poses, expressions, and slight positional changes — slight turns of the shoulders, chin adjustments, different eye directions. The best headshot photographers work through these variations naturally, as a conversation, rather than issuing rigid instructions. You won't know which specific frame is the 'best' until editing — that's normal.
If multiple looks are included, a change of outfit takes 5 minutes and is followed by a shorter set of frames for each additional look — typically 10–15 minutes per additional outfit.
Some photographers show you a selection on the back of the camera or a laptop at the end of the session. Others proceed directly to editing without in-session review. Ask in advance if you have a preference.
The most common thing I hear after a headshot session is: 'I was dreading it, but it was much easier than I expected.' Camera confidence is a skill — but it's not a requirement for excellent headshots. An experienced photographer creates the conditions in which genuine, natural expressions emerge. Your job is to arrive prepared and trust the process.
