Editing timelines vary by photographer and session type, but these are realistic ranges based on current industry standards:
These timelines assume a photographer who is current with their editing queue and not in a peak-season backlog. Some photographers are faster; some are slower. The key is to ask for a specific timeline before booking and for it to be in your contract.
A one-hour portrait session might produce 200–300 raw frames. The editing workflow begins with culling — reviewing every image and selecting the best 40–80 from that total. This alone takes 30–60 minutes. Each selected image then goes through individual editing: exposure and highlight/shadow adjustment, colour grading, skin tone refinement, detail enhancement. A professionally edited portrait where the editing is done properly — not just a bulk preset applied — takes 3–8 minutes per image.
For a gallery of 50 edited portraits from a one-hour session: culling 45 minutes + editing 50 × 5 minutes = 4 hours and 15 minutes of work time. Add file management, export, and gallery upload: closer to 5 hours total for a one-hour session. Weddings with 600–800 selected images can involve 40–60 hours of editing work.
Faster isn't always better. Photographers who deliver in 3–4 days are typically applying bulk presets without individual attention, or have significantly reduced their selection and editing standards. The patience required for thorough, image-by-image editing produces results that are consistently better than speed-edited bulk output. When you receive a gallery that took 2–3 weeks, the time was used.
If your contracted delivery date has passed and you haven't received your gallery, a polite, brief check-in message is entirely appropriate: "Hi — just checking in as I haven't yet received my gallery. Could you let me know the expected delivery date?" Most delays are minor and a brief message resolves them quickly. Photographers appreciate clients who communicate concerns directly rather than silently growing frustrated.
