Start With Style, Not Price

Before looking at any other factor, look at photographers' work and identify one whose style you genuinely respond to emotionally. Photography style isn't interchangeable — a photographer who specialises in bright, airy editorial portraits produces fundamentally different images from one who works in moody, dark, film-inspired tones. A wedding photographer who shoots documentary reportage produces different wedding albums from one who works in a posed fine-art style. Neither is better; they serve different aesthetic preferences.

The mistake many people make when choosing a photographer is narrowing the list by price before narrowing by style. Work backward: find three to five photographers whose work moves you, then have conversations about what they can offer at what investment level. Starting with style produces images you'll love; starting with price produces images you selected mainly because they were affordable.

Portfolio Depth: What to Look For

A few featured images on a homepage can be cherry-picked from years of work. What matters more is the depth and consistency of a photographer's portfolio. Look at full galleries if available — how do the 40th images compare to the first? Look at the variety of clients being photographed — do the results look good across different ages, ethnicities, and body types? Look for results in conditions similar to yours — if you want outdoor summer portraits, how does the photographer's work look in bright outdoor summer light?

Be somewhat cautious of portfolios that look very diverse in style: this can indicate a photographer who adapts heavily to brief rather than having a coherent aesthetic identity, which means what you'll actually get is less predictable than what's shown.

Communication Before Booking

The quality of a photographer's initial communication is a reliable signal of what the overall experience will be like. Do they answer your questions fully? Do they communicate on a timeline that respects your schedule? Do they seem genuinely interested in what you want? A photographer who is slow, vague, or dismissive before booking will not suddenly become attentive and thorough once they have your deposit.

Check What's Included

Different photographers include different things in their quoted price. Some all-in quotes include digital files, prints, albums, and extensive post-processing. Others quote for time only and add everything else. "Cheaper" photographers sometimes produce identical or higher final costs when all deliverables are added. When comparing quotes, compare the full deliverable: number of edited images, delivery format, print rights, turnaround time, and any follow-up provision.
