Photography style is not just about aesthetics — it determines how your images will feel to look at in ten years. Understanding the main approaches before you book means you can make an informed choice rather than hoping the results match what you imagined.
Look at the portfolio as a whole, not individual images. A photographer's editing style is consistent across sessions; one striking image does not tell you about the rest. Look specifically at images with similar conditions to your session: outdoor family portraits if that is what you want, not just their best wedding hero shots.
Pay attention to skin tones — they are the hardest thing to adjust after the fact and vary significantly between styles. Pale, creamy skin tones indicate a lighter approach; warmer golden tones indicate a different processing direction; highly saturated or very cool skin tones are a strong stylistic choice that not everyone responds to equally.
Consider where the images will actually live. Photographs for a modern, white-walled home suit a light and airy style. A dark-toned, heavily styled living room suits moody, dramatic images. Images destined primarily for digital use — social media, websites — are more flexible because screen settings vary so widely.
Think also about longevity. Processing trends change. A style that feels very current in the year the photographs are taken can feel dated a decade later. Classic, true-to-life processing tends to age better than heavily stylised approaches, though the best photographers in any style execute their work in a way that transcends the trend.
If you have found a photographer whose work you respond to but cannot quite articulate why, describe some reference images to them — other photographs you love — and ask whether their approach could produce something similar. A photographer who understands their own style can explain exactly what they would and would not be able to replicate.
