Sarah arrived for her headshot session with a very specific brief: "I need to look like I know what I'm doing, without looking like I'm trying to look like I know what I'm doing." She was a management consultant who had just launched as an independent, and her current LinkedIn profile picture — a cropped group photo from a Christmas party in 2019 — was, in her words, "actively undermining my credibility."
She was not wrong. The photograph was dark, slightly blurred, and showed approximately one third of another person's shoulder. She had been meaning to fix it for three years.
A LinkedIn headshot is a specific kind of portrait with specific requirements. It needs to read at the thumbnail size of the LinkedIn profile grid — approximately 60 by 60 pixels on a desktop — which means the face needs to fill most of the frame and the expression needs to be clearly legible even at miniature scale.
At full size, it needs to withstand reasonably close inspection: skin texture, eye clarity, the quality of the light. A professionally lit headshot against a clean background reads differently from a selfie in a windowless office. This is not a superficial difference; it signals that you take your professional presence seriously.
Sarah's session was ninety minutes in my Cambridge studio. The brief was professional-but-approachable: she works with senior executives but also needs to be seen as personable and accessible. We started with a dark grey suit jacket for the formal end of the brief, moved to a burgundy blazer for something warmer and more individual.
The best images came midway through the session, when we had had enough conversation that she had forgotten to be self-conscious. The expression that a consultant actually uses in a client meeting — engaged, confident, listening — appeared. Those are the images she used.
Sarah updated her LinkedIn profile the week after the session. She emailed me eight weeks later: "Three new client enquiries mentioned they had seen my LinkedIn profile. I genuinely cannot attribute this entirely to the headshot but I also cannot attribute it to anything else that changed." That is the best possible outcome.
Professional headshots for consultants, executives, and anyone who needs to look seriously credible online. Cambridge studio or your own office.
