Choosing what to wear for your maternity photoshoot is one of the most tangible preparations you can make for the session — and the most common source of last-minute anxiety. The good news is that the key principles are simple, and once you understand what photographs well, the decisions become straightforward. Here is practical guidance on maternity photography outfits.
The most universally flattering and photogenic maternity outfit category is the flowing maxi dress — particularly in jersey, chiffon, or lightweight linen that moves gently in light wind and drapes over the bump rather than obscuring it. Look for wrap-style or empire-waist cuts that draw attention to the bump rather than hiding it. The bump is the subject of a maternity photograph; outfits that minimise or obscure it work against the purpose of the session.
Neutrals and soft muted colours work best outdoors — cream, ivory, pale blush, dusty rose, sage green, and soft greys all complement natural light and landscape backgrounds. Vibrant solid colours (terracotta, deep teal, warm burgundy) can also work beautifully, particularly in studio or indoor settings where the background can be controlled.
A fitted approach — a soft ribbed maternity T-shirt, fitted jersey dress, or body-conscious wrap — shows the pregnant form directly and can look powerful and elegant in the right composition. This approach works best in studio settings with controlled light, or in indoor sessions where the background is simple. Outdoors, against complex natural backgrounds, the more defined silhouette of a fitted look can work slightly less harmoniously than the flowing option — but personal comfort and confidence should always take precedence over theoretical photographic considerations.
For outdoor sessions, avoid very dark navy or black against green landscape backgrounds — the lack of tonal contrast between dark clothing and shadowed foliage flattens the image. Pure white can be beautiful but is technically demanding (easily overexposed, shows every piece of fluff), so bring a backup option. Avoid busy patterns, logos, text, and bold horizontal stripes — these draw the eye away from the face and the bump and date the image quickly.
For coordinating with a partner in the same session, the same palette principles from newborn photography apply: coordinate within a palette rather than matching exactly. If you are in cream, they can be in ivory or soft beige — related but not identical.
For outdoor UK sessions, which may involve early morning or evening light in shoulder seasons, bringing a coordinating wrap, lightweight cardigan, or shawl in a complementary neutral gives you warmth between shots and an additional outfit element. A cashmere wrap in cream or pale grey can add texture and comfort without competing with the main outfit.
