Priya was 32 weeks pregnant and she had been hesitating for a month about whether to book a maternity session. "I keep thinking I don't want photographs of myself right now," she told me when she finally got in touch. "But then I think — will I regret not having them? And the answer is always yes."
This is the most common maternity session conversation. The hesitation is real and understandable. The regret — of not booking — is almost universal. The photographs taken at this specific moment in life; the weight of the belly, the particular way the light falls on it, the particular expression that only belongs to those last weeks of pregnancy — these cannot be recreated.
We met on a July evening at 7pm on the Backs — the stretch of riverbank behind the Colleges, where the willows trail into the Cam and the light in the hour before sunset is extraordinary. Priya wore a flowing sage dress she had bought specifically for the session. Her partner, David, came to be in some of the photographs and to carry the blanket and the tea.
The light at 7pm in July in Cambridge comes low and golden from the northwest. It catches the water and bounces back upward. The willows filter it. There is a 45-minute window of genuinely exceptional light before it drops below the college roofline, and we worked in that window completely.
The images from Priya's session are a study in what evening river light does to a subject. Warm, directional, soft enough to be kind but retaining enough contrast to give shape. The flowing dress moved in the light river breeze. The willows framed her at the river's edge. David sat on the grass watching, and then joined her for ten minutes.
Four weeks later, Priya messaged to say the baby had arrived safely. "I'm already so glad we did the session," she wrote. "He's already so big and I can barely remember."
