A newborn photo session is unlike any other type of photography booking. The timing is quite specific, the preparation involves more thought than most sessions, and what happens on the day depends enormously on a small person with no concept of schedules. This guide covers everything: when to book, what to prepare, what a session actually involves, and what you'll receive.
Book before the baby arrives — ideally at 20–30 weeks pregnant. Experienced newborn photographers fill their calendars months ahead, and the window for the session itself (5–14 days after birth) is specific enough that you need a flexible booking arrangement. Most newborn photographers accept provisional bookings with the understanding that the exact date is confirmed once the baby arrives.
The 5–14 day window
Newborns are most pliable and sleepy in their first two weeks — this is the window when curled, posed sessions (wrapped babies in props, sleeping poses) are most achievable. After 2 weeks, babies become more alert and awake, which changes what's possible. Sessions after this point are beautiful but look different — more awake and expressive rather than deeply asleep and curled.
| Home session | Studio session | |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Photographer travels to you, no packing up a newborn | You travel to the studio (short journey, but logistics with a newborn) |
| Props and equipment | Limited to what the photographer brings; your home's natural elements | Full range of props, backdrops, beanbag setup, controlled heat |
| Light quality | Depends on your home's windows and orientation | Controlled, consistent, always optimal |
| Feel | Contextual — your home in the background, family life visible | Clean, styled, focused purely on baby |
| Temperature | Comfortable for all parties | Heated specifically for sleeping baby (around 27°C) |
Newborn sessions typically last 2–4 hours — much longer than might seem necessary for a sleeping baby. The extended time is essential: babies need to be fed, settled, wrapped, repositioned, and sometimes resettled. A session that feels like it's taking too long is usually running exactly on schedule.
Professional newborn photographers typically deliver 30–60 edited images from a full session, via an online gallery. These are high-resolution files suitable for printing at any size. Delivery time is usually 1–3 weeks. Albums, prints, and wall art are available from most photographers as additional products.
Is it safe to pose a newborn?
In the hands of a trained newborn photographer, yes. Composite posing (using multiple images to create the appearance of unsupported positions), careful head support, safe wrapping, and temperature management are all parts of professional newborn photography training. Ask about your photographer's training and approach if you have concerns.
What if my baby won't sleep?
This is the most common question and the most common worry. Awake sessions are beautiful — wide-eyed newborn portraits are wonderful. The session adapts to the baby, not the other way around. An experienced photographer is entirely comfortable with an alert baby.
Can we include props we already own?
Absolutely — blankets, a family heirloom, the hospital bracelet, a specific basket or toy — these add personal meaning to the session. Let your photographer know in advance what you'd like to include.
Can premature babies have newborn sessions?
Yes, with care. Sessions for premature babies are typically timed from their corrected age (due date), not birth date. Specialist premature baby photographers have specific experience with the particular sensitivities and handling requirements.
