The first two weeks of a baby's life are extraordinary — and they pass faster than almost any other period of parenthood. Newborn photography exists to slow that time down: to give you images that capture the tiny curled fingers, the impossibly small features, and the overwhelming tenderness of those first days as a family.
This guide is for new and expecting parents in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire who are considering a newborn photoshoot — covering timing, what to expect, safety, and how to prepare.
When Should You Book — and When Should You Shoot?
The golden window: 5–14 days old
Newborn photography works best in the first two weeks of life. Babies at this age are sleepy, flexible, and curl naturally into beautiful poses. After about 14 days, they become more alert and awake — still wonderful, but less amenable to the classic newborn poses many parents want.
Book during your pregnancy — ideally between 20–30 weeks gestation. This reserves a slot in your due-date window. After the birth, I confirm the exact date within the first few days. Don't wait until after the baby arrives to book — the 5–14 day window fills quickly.
Studio or At-Home Newborn Photography?

Newborn Photography Safety
Safety is the absolute first priority in newborn photography. All poses I use are safe, parent-supported positions. I do not use composite techniques that place babies in unsafe positions unsupported. The 'froggy pose' and similar classics are achieved with full parental hand support, then combined in post-processing if needed.
- Never leave a baby unattended on a posing surface at any height
- Continuous parental presence throughout the session
- Session paused immediately if baby is distressed
- Temperature kept warm (newborns lose heat rapidly)
- No posing that places any strain on neck, spine or hips
How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session
- Feed before the session — a full, sleepy baby is the ideal subject. Feed just before I arrive if possible.
- Keep the house warm — around 23–24°C if your home is the session location. Babies settle more easily when warm.
- No pressure on sleepiness — some newborns won't sleep deeply. Awake newborn shots are beautiful too.
- Have nappies and a spare outfit ready — accidents happen; it's completely normal and expected.
- Any special items? Blankets, toys, heirlooms, hospital bracelets — tell me in advance and I'll incorporate them.
