If you have not worked with a professional photographer before, you may be wondering how you actually receive your photographs at the end of the process. The answer for most professional photographers is an online gallery — a private, password-protected website where your images are hosted, viewable, downloadable, and available for print ordering.

How an Online Gallery Works

When your edited gallery is ready, you receive an email with a link to your private gallery and a password to access it. You visit the website, enter the password, and see your full edited collection presented in a clean, professional grid layout. You can view each image at full size, favourite the ones you want to download first, and download the full resolution files directly to your computer or phone.

The gallery is hosted for a period of time — typically 12 months, sometimes longer depending on the photographer and package. During this period, you can return to order prints, share the gallery link with family members using the same password, and access your images from any device.

What 'Full Resolution' Means

Full resolution digital files are the maximum size the camera captured — typically 20 to 45 megapixels depending on the camera system. These are suitable for printing at any size up to very large (A0 and beyond). They are also suitable for sharing online, sending to phone or social media, and archiving permanently.

What to Do with Your Files

Download your full gallery as soon as it is delivered. Copy the files to at least two separate storage locations — a laptop and an external drive, or a laptop and a cloud storage service. Professional photographs represent a significant investment and deserve proper backup. Online gallery hosting periods end; your own backup does not.
