An author photograph sits on book jackets, in press kits, on speaker bureau listings, and in every interview, review, and feature published about your work. It is the single most-used professional image most authors have. Getting it right matters more than most authors realise until it's already in print.
Back-of-jacket portrait
The classic author headshot. Clean background, good light, current. This will appear at thumbnail size in online bookshops and at larger scale in physical books and magazines.
Press photograph
Higher resolution, often landscape, usable for newspapers, literary supplements, and magazine features. Slightly different framing from the jacket shot to give editors options.
Speaker biography photo
If you'll speak at literary festivals, conferences, or panels, the organisers need a photograph for print programmes and promotional material. Usually square-croppable.
Website and blog imagery
Lifestyle photographs — reading, writing, in your study, in a location relevant to your book — for the About page, blog header, and social media.
Standard headshots are interchangeable. Author brand photography is specific — it communicates genre, tone, and personality. A crime thriller author looks different from a children's picture book illustrator, who looks different from a literary fiction novelist. The most effective author photographs communicate something about the work as well as the person. This requires more thought, more context, and usually more than one set-up.
The practical answer: as early as possible in the pre-publication process. Publishers and publicists need high-resolution images months before publication date — often 3 to 6 months ahead for review copies, media packs, and pre-order campaigns. Booking a photography session 6 months ahead of your publication date gives comfortable lead time. Booking at 4 weeks ahead creates unnecessary pressure and risks the need for a reshoot.
