A gallery wall of professional photographs is one of the genuinely worthwhile home improvements. It requires planning but no renovation, costs less than most people assume, and transforms a blank wall into something that means something every time you walk past it.
The ideal gallery wall needs: enough width for your planned arrangement (minimum 1.2m for most layouts), good natural light or nearby lighting (photographs need to be seen clearly), and a neutral background (white, off-white, or light grey walls make photographs pop; dark walls work but require brighter printing).
The most common locations: the hallway (the first thing visitors see), the staircase wall (excellent for a vertical arrangement), the living room wall opposite the sofa, or the main bedroom wall above the bed.
Plan on the floor before committing to the wall. Lay out all the frames you intend to use and arrange them until you are happy with the composition. Take a photograph of the arrangement, then transfer it to the wall using paper templates cut to the exact size of each frame — tape them to the wall with painter's tape, step back, and adjust before a single nail goes in.
A good gallery wall usually has: one large anchor image (40x50cm or larger) that provides a visual centre, a mix of portrait and landscape orientations, consistent framing (same colour or finish, even if frames vary in size), and some breathing space between frames — crowding photographs together makes individual images harder to read.
A gallery wall with all the same-sized prints looks static. Mix sizes — a large wedding portrait alongside smaller ceremony details, a full-family image alongside an individual child portrait, a landscape alongside a square-format image. The variation creates visual rhythm.
Fine art prints in a range of sizes, ready to frame. Print orders available for all clients with an existing gallery.
