Turnaround time is the period between your photography session ending and you receiving your finished, edited gallery. It's one of the most frequently asked questions during the booking process and one of the most important things to confirm before signing a contract.
Turnaround time varies significantly between photographers because the post-production workload varies: different photographers deliver different quantities of edited images, apply different degrees of editing to each, and manage different volumes of concurrent bookings. A photographer with 5 active weddings in editing simultaneously will deliver more slowly than one with 2.
Portrait sessions (1–2 hours, 50–80 images): 1–3 weeks is standard. Photographers who prioritise fast delivery may offer 5–7 days; less organised practices may run to 4+ weeks for portrait sessions.
Engagement sessions (1.5–3 hours, 60–100 images): 2–3 weeks is typical.
Weddings (full day, 400–800 images): 4–8 weeks is the industry standard. Some photographers offer 3-week delivery at premium pricing or as a standard of their service. 12+ weeks is long and worth asking about explicitly during booking.
Newborn sessions (2–3 hours, 40–60 images): 2–4 weeks is common, sometimes longer if the photographer is heavily booked.
Any turnaround time that is clearly stated in your contract before booking is appropriate, as long as it's within broadly reasonable industry ranges and the photographer meets it. A photographer who quotes 6 weeks and delivers at 6 weeks is fine. A photographer who quotes 3 weeks and delivers at 8 weeks is in breach of their contract. The specific number matters less than the reliability with which it's kept.
If your contracted delivery date has passed without receipt of your gallery, contact your photographer by email. A brief, polite message ("Hi — my gallery was due [date], could you give me an updated delivery timeline?") is entirely reasonable. Most delays are minor operational ones and a message resolves them quickly. If you receive no response over several days, escalate through the communication method used during booking (sometimes phone is more effective than email for time-sensitive matters).
