There are weddings that work despite the elements. And then there is the kind of wedding that needs the elements to be fully itself — where the wind, the sea, and the particular quality of Atlantic light are not inconveniences to manage but the entire point. Megan and Tom chose Cornwall in April and they chose correctly.
The venue was a clifftop hotel above the south Cornish coast near Fowey: granite walls, slate roofs, lawns that ran to the cliff edge, and beyond them the sea dropping sheer to the rocks below. The weather forecast for their wedding day was wind and cloud with occasional sun. Which is to say: Cornwall in April, which is to say: perfect.
The ceremony was outside. This was always the plan, and the couple held to it despite the forecast. The registrar, experienced in outdoor ceremonies, had a microphone system secured against the wind. The guests kept hold of their order of service cards. The flowers — chosen to be robust — moved in the wind and looked wonderful.
The photographs from that ceremony show something that would not be achievable in a calm marquee: the movement, the energy, the specific authenticity of a couple saying their vows three metres from a cliff edge with the Atlantic visible over their shoulders and their hair and their guests' coats in motion.
The light on the Cornish coast has a quality that is difficult to explain to non-photographers. The sea bounces light upwards; the clouds create drama; the diffusion is soft but the contrast is still present. The late afternoon portraits above the main cove — the light coming in low and warm from the west, the sea ten metres below them, the waves audible — produced the kind of images that require nothing additional from a photographer. You simply point the camera at the scene.
A coastal wedding requires logistical preparation: equipment bags that protect against sea salt and dampness, lens cloths readily accessible for spray, footwear appropriate for cliff paths, and a thorough knowledge of the site in advance. The content of the images makes every preparation worthwhile.
